I just replaced my 2 year old Galaxy Nexus with a Nexus 7. Its not a "phone", but with free Google Voice and free Talkatone, I get free phone/SMS service anywhere I have WiFi. I even ported my old phone number to GV, so I don't even have to worry about that.

So yeah, that's convenient. I don't know why more people don't do this.

You can do free VoIP over 3g or 4g too. A cheap unlimited data plan would cover you better and cheaper than limited minutes and limited SMS. If you're willing to go for a data-only tablet, you could get it even cheaper than a phone that also has a superfluous voice/SMS plan.

Optimus L9.. was torn between this and the F3 solely because of the battery life but i'm still on the fence. Budget win?

A samsung flip phone of some sort. I use it like once a week for phonecalls.
I wish I had grabbed the rotary phone my parents replaced like last year. It might be worth something in another 30 years.
