Afro, yeah with Link's final smash, as long as someone is in range when the attack is initiated, he'll hit them. Generally there isn't enough time to actually get away, so what happened to you won't occur very often.
From what I understand, he activated the attack and then you rolled away, meaning you were in range when it was activated. That's why you got hit.
And by "initiated" or "activated," I'm referring to a specific point during the animation where Link sort of raises his hand and you see light come out of it. It's subtle, but noticeable. My understanding is that this is where the game checks if there are any targets in range.
Was the whole "character teleporting into triforce" thing the right decision for what should happen under those circumstances? Who knows? It's probably better than Link slashing at a Triforce prison with nothing in it.
