Re: Super Smash Brothers Brawl: Release Date Announced

There's a problem with soccer, basketball, tennis, etc. using the same theory I have for videogames. See, with soccer, you practice your entire time kicking a ball around (unless you're a goalie). With basketball, you practice shooting, passing, and defending. With your hands. A basketball player can never be a soccer player (professionally). Tennis, you're holding a racquet hitting a small ball. You don't even touch the ball with your own body aside from serving. Completely different from the other sports.

But video games. Aside from the Wii's purely motion-controlled games, you're using fingers to press buttons. That's it. Your skill comes from hand-eye coordination. Anyone who plays a game long enough with good hand-eye coordination can master it.

There's an upper limit to games. You can only move your fingers so fast. The screen can only display so much. You can only stay awake so long. But with sports, the only limit is the human body. How long you can play is based on how well your body is hydrated and conditioned for extended periods of play. How hard you can throw / hit / kick the ball depends on how strong your muscles are and how skilled you are at hit/throw/kicking it at its hardest.

How fast you move your fingers? What a ridiculous concept for a tournament. I can't believe so many people buy into video gaming as an acceptable tournament event.

Re: Super Smash Brothers Brawl: Release Date Announced

well but the point is, that to win a tournament you need skill, well it sounds stupid if you say it that way, because you also have to use some kind of strategy in smash, the ability to think really fast. what's the point of moving your fingers fast if you don't have a coordination? and multiplayer is something really popular since the beggining of gaming, a tournament is just an interesting idea of who is the best in that game.

but well tournaments and on-line gaming like it or not is something to prove your gaming skills with other gamers some cheat and use cheap glitches but the ones that don't are the ones that give a very good fight, and also i love to beat people who use glitches.

Isn't that what we do in FFR? How is that concept hard to carry over to another game? In a tournament there are prizes, in a tournament people try there best.

Tournament: a trial of skill in some game, in which competitors play a series of contests Source

It is acceptable you just don't approve because you're not hardcore like the people that would actually enter said tournaments.

With all video games and even moreso from the Wii's purely motion-controlled games, you're using fingers to press buttons. Your skill comes from hand-eye coordination. Anyone who plays a game long enough with good hand-eye coordination can master it. Likewise in Baseball when you swing the bat to connect to a ball, in videogames you're simply pressing down your finger to make contact in a virtual realm. Using the same skills as real sports to be a great player.

There's an upper limit to games and sports. You can only move your fingers, arms, legs so fast. Your eyes can only comprehend so much. You can only stay awake so long. With sports, the only limit is the human body. How long you can play is based on how well your body is hydrated and conditioned for extended periods of play. How hard you can throw / hit / kick the ball depends on how strong your muscles are and how skilled you are at hit/throw/kicking it at its hardest. With videogames it's the same exact thing using different muscles with rules created in the game abiding by rules like virtual gravity and physics in the virtual world.

How fast you move your fingers? What a completely valid concept for a tournament. I believe the reason so many people buy into video gaming as an acceptable tournament event is because it takes just as much dedication as a real sport.

No, I don't play FFR any more.

FFR tournaments are not televised. They don't have thousand-dollar cash prizes. You can't compare that to Super Smash Brothers.

Also, FFR/Stepmania is more tournament-worthy than SSBM. The level of speed your fingers have to move along with the speed your eyes need to read and interpret the arrows far exceeds the skill level of SSBM. And yet, there still aren't televised FFR/Stepmania tournaments.

And finally, I'd totally go to tournaments if you all weren't wavedash/anti-item whores. Except I just don't care enough to drive myself out somewhere to play a party game against people I don't know only to have them go ROFL PWNED U SUX NOOB LOLOLOLOL when they beat someone.

Re: Super Smash Brothers Brawl: Release Date Announced

Squeek, I've played in tournaments for quite a while now.

No one has ever told me I suck. I have never told anyone they suck. I've never even heard of it happening.

There will be jerks in any game, but most people in SSBM are nice and just wanna have fun.

But well, if you go "oh, you can't win without that ____", people are gonna, as you said, be jerks about it.
I knew this was coming. I just knew it. But somehow, I didn't stop, because maybe I expected someone would stop me first.

You can't tell me it doesn't happen. That's all I hear in Counter-Strike matches, for one. In Halo, it's customary to give someone the good 'ol "You Suck!" in the form of a teabag. I can't imagine that just for Super Smash Brothers, people are all like "oh, that was a splendid match old chap!" "righto! Care for a cup of tea, lad?"

But whatever. I said before I won't have a problem playing online with anyone from FFR.

It happens in Halo all of the time, and I've never played CS, but I'd imagine it happens there as well.

SSBM players are, in general, nicer.

They really are the people who just started playing this as a party game with their buds and started to play more and more until it got a little competitive.

Very true. I've met over 600 people in the smash community. There was probably 1 guy I thought was kind of an asshole. lol

..and it's obvious you've never gotten too into smash, because it does require precise timing and speedy fingers. It's easily compared to FFR in my opinion. Except, the fight can go so many different ways. FFR is the same stepfile each stage. Learning how to be quick with your fingers, precise with your attacks and timing, to deal with certain situations while still not letting yourself be predictable about it. It's tough, but it's fun as ****. I've sat down and played a guy that JUST found SmashBoards, he was very bad. I played him for hours on end, because he had the will to get better. I admired that, so I helped him. He said he wasn't leaving until he beat me, but it got pretty late. lolol

I play this game like that for yeeaarss, until I found SmashBoards a year and a half ago. Then I thought, I wonder how good someone is at this game. I downloaded a video, I loved what I saw.. and it's the things like not fighting people that wavedash, or even giving it a try that holds the game back. That's why it's become what it is today. We've discovered so many things within the game, and that's opened so many levels of gameplay.

You're joking right? Metal Gear Solid and acid are horrible games. I can't stand to play it. I can't even stand touching a ps1-2-3 controller. Horrible system, horrible games. I will admit though, the only game I liked was FF7, and before you go off crushing someones dreams, post productive comments.

I will love the online play! Do you have to pay for a certain, how you say, account? Does it work like Metroid Prime: Hunters? Because my wii connects to my wireless router, as does most.

And it's obvious you didn't read other threads about Melee.

I 100% completed the game. I don't care if you "rofl" at it because I didn't have to play against aZnXPika4Marth or whoever you constantly talk about. I spent days getting all 290 trophies. Then I got them all and I was done with the game. So I started playing --gasp-- *other* games!

My Gamecube library is at 42 games now. I've 100% completed at least half. I don't have the time to continuously play one game over and over again if I ever care to play other games to completion or beyond. After I 100%d it, it turned into a game to play when friends were over and nothing more.

OMG I CAN'T WAIT....JEEZ. I have been saving up money little by little for a Wii....AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I love Super Smash, but it is hard to play while I am away from home. Currently I play the first one online, but pretty soon melee will be coming out online on the GC emulator...thankfully. I already have my super joy box 13 set up and everything (sjb13 is the gc controller to usb converter.)
