In majority of cases I find those people have better form of writing than so called native speakers with their despicable way of trying to shrink words using numbers and avoiding to spell correctly, seemingly on purpose. Then they grow up used to writing like that.

I only did that over the internet as a youngen, and that's because I was easily influenced at that age. The only person that I know of that writes that horribly in real life is a real idiot, and I haven't seen her since 7th grade.

Sadly there are actually a lot of people who shorten "you" as "u" in real life =/ I found a note someone passed to someone else on the ground a few weeks ago and... oh God, the grammar! Where was it?

          That's not a grammatical error.

It's just bad writing practice. Normally, I'd call it a spelling error, but it can hardly be called that if it was done on purpose.

ps one of my bosses left me a note at work the other day and they used "u" in it.

I understand using some acronyms to shorten something or if you're trying to write a quick message, but I have my limits.

What is with this site's obsession with grammar? You must face reality that the internet generation is going to become a bit lazy and have bad grammar but it's the fact that you can understand them that makes all the difference. If you cannot understand the person that is speaking because of it, then that is a different story.

I just wish all of you people who always tell people to use good grammar would shut up, because no matter how many times you tell a person to do it, they aren't going to. It's a pointless cause.

                Enough said.
Usually, I don't mind reading the usual chatspeak. But if a person types LyK3 D15, then I'll tell them to shut up. I guess it all depends on your level of patience.

Hm. It's good to type correctly and all but many people just do it when they can't find proper fault at another. I can remember tons of instances where this was the case as well. Take this for example, a kid puts up a logical argument, and although it is hard to read, it's very sensible. He gets flamed for typing the way he does..It's usually just a last resort for flaming someone. As a whole though for just typing, it's just good to get in a habit of doing as society today prefers good grammar over horrible grammar.
"What is good? All that heightens the feeling of power in man, the will to power, power itself. What is bad? All that is born of weakness. What is happiness? The feeling that power is growing, that resistance is overcome."

I don't see this "flaming" often. I see people respond to his statement and then type "please check your grammar" as a sidenote.

oh my word, i put 'u' in an essay once and only realised it was wrong when i read through it at the end. Ever since then i've started writing you even in instant messenger because i was so angry at myself

There's still a bit to improve on, but yes, it seems you learned from experience, and that's great, because apparently many people don't. If everyone learned by us telling them not to do it, we wouldn't even have this topic.

Also, NO ONE has perfect grammar. It'd probably take longer than a lifetime to learn every single grammatical thing in English. You know how some rules and words *** up grammar and make no sense? That's what I'm talking about.

                          Now that I think of it, same here too o_O;

I remember when I joined this site 2.75 years ago, I met Squeek on MrEsqueek, and on AIM he eventually got me to type formally. Now I got my friends to do the same.

And before I post anything that is longer than a sentence, I copy and paste it in Microsoft Word to see what the spell check/auto correct thing comes up with.

wow, that is comitted/committed... I wish I was so zealous.

ToshX, I know my grammar isn't perfect, as I said in a previous post, but look, in this one I've capitalised all my 'I's

Firefox 2.0 for a built in spell checker

                              Works wonders for my spelling.

I first started out in forums with the dumbed down English, but started using formality when I joined a forum where everyone wrote elegantly. Now I type out everything instant messaging except my 'I's. I still use idk, idc, lol, and lmao.

I'm active in a community that has FAR more Germans and Frenchies in it than Americans/Australians. Dutch, Belgians, Spaniards, and Finns, too. Many of them type with impeccable English grammar, and some with pretty bad grammar (I can't believe how the lose/loose problem crossed the Atlantic). But that's totally understandable. When I'm there, I'll correct a recurring problem here and there, but I don't expect much.

However, when I'm here, this is a well-over-99% English-speaking community. I get to expect more from native speakers than ESL's.
