I consider the English language (and most other languages) an intricate, arbitrarily productive, but structured formal system. Incorrect (or incoherent) grammar strikes me as a deplorable loss of meaning and rigor. It's not a matter of propriety or manners. It's not a matter of whether others can understand you. It's a matter of how clear you are making your statements and/or questions. It's a matter of being neat in conveying meaning. Bad grammar is a sign of sloppy thinking, whether in spoken, written, or typed form.

I always use the best grammar I can, not because I want to, but because I have to, I have OCD and it sucks. I'm constantly re-reading what I've only just typed and all the people I talk to say I take too long to type, and then they say I make everything too good. It's an annoying cycle..

P.S. I'm not that great at grammar and spelling but I still have to try my best, even if it's not great.

I guess you can try to correct the grammar, but it's a pointless effort.

Doesn't mean we're not going to try anyway.

And "it's not FFR's job to police other forums." That would have been a smart response if i wasn't using it as an example of the internet generation's bad grammar.

I actually enjoy typing properly. FFR improved my vocabulary and overall writing ability. I don't really enjoy enforcing correct grammar upon people, but I don't mind that the site enforces it.

You say we're imposing on your right to type with less than decent grammar, while at the same time imposing on our right to bitch about it...

I really don't see what the big deal is with proper grammar. If you just practice it for a few weeks it becomes natural. I have to go out of my way to type badly, and that winds up taking me twice as long to type, so "saving time" isn't an excuse.

For me there are lines you don't cross. Grammar doesn't have to be perfect, and the message is more important. However, when it's noticably bad; IE huge spelling mistakes and use of slang and shortcuts, it gets annoying.

Big words are just for show, and over-using them makes you sound like a **** as well. A post that is over dramatic with wording really takes away from the message, and for me my motto is keep things as simple as you can.

So in my opinion you can go too far in either direction.

Not that I have to worry about the second case very much XD The first case is where all the problems are. I think people need to present themselfs in a decent manner, or else they just look like fools. If people don't want to clean up their act and like looking like a fool then whatever, so be it.

Also, I type MUCH faster in proper grammar than I do in shorthand. In fact, I hate typing in shorthand, because I have to think in order to say a word like 4get or something like that. Rather, I can just type whatever's in my head this way and never really have to, well, think.

Also, big words just come out every once in a while, I don't use them to try to sound smart, as I'm sure many others don't.

This isn't true at all. I frequently PM members with horrible orthography and ask them to type better. More often than not, they do. And I don't just do it because it's easier on my eyes. I try to get them to understand that they will be ignored and thought less of if they type poorly. Y'know where that's especially true? Places that aren't the internet. Real life, if you will. Getting people to type better on internet forums and chat rooms is just a step; it's a habit that is then carried over into all forms of writing, which is only beneficial to everybody and not harmful to anybody.

It doesn't matter if you like it or not; but if you can't effectively communicate, you won't be taken seriously. It's true that this fact is less apparent online on flash game forums and the like, but that's no reason to disregard it completely.

Would you honestly rather read gaiaonline than FFR, where most of the forum regulars use good spelling and grammar?

Uh, "themself" isn't a word. You'd do well to avoid reflexivity as much as possible in this case, but either make it gender restrictive and say "himself" or gender neutral and say "him- or herself".

Typos happen. I personally rarely reread what I have written.

There's a difference between a typo and just not knowing how to spell a word/ structure a sentence and making it obvious. I have a flock of words I commonly misspell XD

Big words do have their place, of course. It bothers me when people try too hard though. I guess it has to do with personal style and opinion in the end.
