If they made up their own rhythms for beatmania, that game would suck so much unbelievable ass hahaha

They do actually, kind of. Seriously, so many of the grace notes in IIDX (that 32nd shit you see in songs like y31 another that really shouldn't be there) ruin the game for me which is why I'm making my own game/notes haha

Anyways you guys are taking "Technically Sound" to an extreme, I'll enlighten you all for a second. Toph made the a la menthe because it was going to be his hardest file, but most of the time his simfiles are very fun, people take this out of context and give lots of examples like "WELLLLLL I DIDN'T LIKE HIS TELL ME A STORY OR GIRL BOY SONG OR WHATEVER TECHNICALLY SOUND != FUN"

Yeah, you can state that but I can also state that not technically sound files != fun. A file can be technically sound (holy shit I need another word for this because this is becoming so redundant) and be fun as hell.

Seriously, I think this is just a matter of preference in the way patterns are arranged and the fact that there's "styles" of play. No one complains about the patterns in IIDX because when you get to the later levels you pretty much HAVE to play with that one style, and in games like Pop'n music, everyone pretty much plays with the same style (there isn't one huge advantage over another), but in Stepmania the fact that the users can create the simfiles and create simfiles specifically geared toward the ways they hit the arrows kind of cheapens the game a bit.

Toph doesn't care about style, he is the most unbiased step artist I have ever seen. I'll get into this but before one of you brings up Reality, that's because all the stepfiles for FFR were supposed to be 'index friendly'. I forgot how all of us up agreeing on this, but looking back on it now it would've made sense if they were all one hand oriented with an extra spacebar button or something because the majority of players (like 60%) play with one hand. Toph always gets people who comment about how his patterns are "uncomfortable" so most of the time he just makes the patterns he thinks best suit the music because he figures people will enjoy them either way. I said the same thing to the o2jam GM (except replace Toph and have me referring to myself and it's basically the same point), when they feared I was gearing my gaussian blur notes towards a "IIDX like" setup, and then I pointed out all the examples where I made it geared toward the sdf jkl setup.

Whenever I played one of Reach's files, they felt "cheap". He doesn't follow pattern rule (i.e. lay out 'bases' for your patterns so that they make sense), it's just random patterns. It reminds me of when I made that LSD stepfile and that Bag Japan one, all I did was just put random arrows. I don't find them fun because I feel like I could make something like that in 30 minutes =\

Anyway if you want to argue about it, Eggman's (overall) are the most 'technically sound' files out there since he copies the IIDX notes. The IIDX notes aren't always accurate but he does it anyway haha

This game is starting to remind me of Counter Strike or Warcraft or something. "i own u noob" "no u didnt *** sucky map asshole"

I just hope none of you people start making BMSes.

Tell Me a Story was excellent. It's tied with As Do I for my favorite R2 simfile.

I'm not saying that technical soundness automatically means the stepfile isn't worth playing. I'm just saying that it's not the most important factor, and that fun is, which you, Toph, Mwerp and aperson (among others) all seem to not realize because you all obsess about how perfectly structured any given stepfile must be WAY too much.

Of course if you happen to directly equate fun to how sound a simfile is then yeah that's fine but you need to understand that not everyone is going to agree with you because the structure crowd rags on unstructured simfiles more than the fun crowd rags on simfiles that aren't fun.

If a simfile is fun but horrid structurally (Reach seems to be the structure crowd's favorite target) then I'll play it a lot. Why do you think I nominated Bag Japan Mix and LSD for the Community Pack? I don't care what you were thinking when you made then or how long you took. You could've been drunk off your ass the whole time for all I know. None of that makes a difference to me because I enjoy both of those stepfiles and thus feel they deserve mention.

On the other hand, if the simfile is perfectly structured but no fun at all (GBS Oni, Oi Punk) then the only reason I'll end up playing it is to get a given grade/score and then never return to it again.

And on a side note, I've been professing this feeling ever since I first played GBS, not just in the past couple of days, so don't think I'm hopping on some bandwagon or something.

EDIT: This discussion made me laugh at Waka Laka since that was more or less random patterns and was completed in under an hour and a half.
I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same, it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be 'morrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.

LSD has arrows that don't even go to anything. It's a really annoying stepfile to me honestly =\

Yeah if a file has notes that are random I can't really enjoy it because it doesn't make any sense. I do enjoy a few sims that are a little more random though, but more times than not simfiles like that just seem rushed and sloppy.

If anyone says something I deem worth commenting on/incredibly stupid l might come back.

                  Well xD
I'm obviously no pro stepfiler. I do enjoy my own stepfiles.. but I rarely play them. They're great for one-handed, though.
I don't bias my steps one way or another, I just put them in a style I think of when I'm listening to the song. Like if I think a song deserves to be streamy and index-friendly (thought I don't think of it index-friendly) then I will make it streamy. Though not all of my simfiles are 100% index friendly as I have to throw in some difficult patterns somewhere (my V for example). But less about me and more about in general.. well Arch0wl is right, technically sound can be fun. It really depends on the patterns in the song. I won't make a song technical even if it would generate a tough chart if it's going to be all random and stupid. Simfiles that aren't consistent and randomly put together can be fun, but again it depends on your playstyle and the patterns it uses. Of course there's always the general pattern that any playstyle can enjoy, which is ladders/staircases.

Anyways.. I've been trying to experiment a lot and find out which patterns work best. BMR was smart like this - you all may think he's a shitty simfile artist, but his patterns are mad fun to play. I love his Fly Away on 1x. It's all about what people find as fun - not what is generally good when it comes to making simfiles. <-- ALTHOUGH I will add in the comment it depends on your crowd. If your crowd is like a ton of insanely good stepfile artists or just a bunch of people who make steps then it's probably going to be the other way around - to make them as "good" as possible rather then focusing on how fun it is. But of course in FFR's case most of the people here play.

i really don't know what we're all talking about anymore

                    XD

i still think toph's new and old files are fun with index and 4 finger ( being relatively good in both styles ). maybe they aren't fun with one hand? SNOW is VERY fun with one hand, that goes for gentle stress, outer limits, innocent walls, love is orange, max 300, and alot of others. now i'm not exactly the greatest one hander, but i'm better than quite a few of the people on here ( i don't post scores because i'm not extremely decent ).

ps: this goes to show how poor the moderation is on this site, jesus christ they don't even take one glimpse at this forum.
