"Technically, the word "gift" is a noun being used as a verb. However, it does not end in -ING. Therefore, it is a verb not a noun or gerund. We had the EXACT same question on a quiz awhile ago, which we went over the answers in class.

As the object of a preposition, the noun phrase a while is used

"Awhile" is an adverb.
