My mom had/has depression, plus problems with her parents and sister/her dad dying forced her into becoming an alcoholic. She doesnt even really have friends because she's always in the house. She was an alcoholic from when I was 3-7, and she only stopped because my dad threatened to take me and my sister and move somewhere else. Then she started again when I was 12 and even threats of divorce and going to rehab once didn't stop her. Finally she had to go down to Florida for 2-3 months of rehab during my school year and she's been sober for ALMOST a year. It's retarded when people say that there's nothing wrong with alcohol when they've never seen the bad side of it like i've seen it.

By physically she means that there is nothing in the substance that makes your body rely on it. Cigarettes have nicotine in them, so wheather you think smoking is disgusting or you love the feel of it, your BODY will crave the NICOTINE INSIDE the DRUG. Not your mind, your BODY.

Your mother is MENTALLY addicted to alchohol. I am really sorry to hear that, it sounds like you've been through a lot so I guess I can see why you're so defensive about it, but Alchohol isn't addictive like people think it is..

I wouldn't have even said anything if you didn't go so far as to call her retarted. I absolutely hate it when people insult others while they're trying to prove a point to them. It makes me just not want to hear what you're saying, or even respect it. It's kinda PETTY and it's what CHILDREN do.

There are better ways of getting a point across.

I've heard managers of stores will look you up on myspace/facebook etc and see if you do any illegal stuff, and they've rejected people applying for jobs because they found evidence of people drinking and smoking pot.

Also, you guys may think drinking is really cool and fun, but in reality it's just a stupid thing to start to make a habit of. Of course occasionally drinking with your friends is acceptable, but what LD did was completely ridiculous, imo. Getting drunk every night for a week, and it looked to me like he just did it to "fit in", and then started to brag on it online to everyone who doesn't give a **** (like me)? Yeah, way to be a tool.

Yeah, I also heard about employers looking at Facebook/Myspace to see if you smoke or drink.

I drink every once in awhile, but I would never drink for a week straight. Even two days in a row is a lot. It's just not that fun. More importantly though, is how much you drink. If you go out and become belligerent everytime you drink, that's when it's bad.

There are two kinds of addictions, physical and psychological.

Cocaine, for example, does not cause physical addiction, but psychological.
Tobacco, heroin, alcohol and many other drugs are physically addictive.

Alcohol is a PHYSICALLY ADDICTIVE drug, which means even if you have strong willpower your body will reject your withdrawal from the drug. People have died from going cold turkey from alcohol addiction. It is very much a genetic thing, considering my parents both drink like crazy and so did my grandfather and they don't have a trace of addiction.

So Jurs should probably never drink, but its OK for me or LD to drink as much as we want.

Alcohol withdrawal

There are several distinct but not mutually exclusive alcohol withdrawal syndromes caused by alcohol withdrawal:

* Tremulousness - "the shakes"
* Activation syndrome - characterized by tremulousness, agitation, rapid heart beat and high blood pressure.
* Seizures - acute grand mal seizures can occur in alcohol withdrawal in patients who have no history of seizure or any structural brain disease.
* Hallucinations - usually visual or tactile in alcoholics
* Delirium tremens - can be severe and often fatal.

Unlike withdrawal from opioids such as heroin, which can be unpleasant but never fatal (Lowinson), alcohol withdrawal can kill (by uncontrolled convulsions or delirium tremens) if it is not properly managed. The pharmacological management of alcohol withdrawal is based on the fact that alcohol, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines have remarkably similar effects on the brain and can be substituted for each other. Since benzodiazepines are the safest of the three classes of drugs, alcohol consumption is terminated and a long-acting benzodiazepine is substituted to block the alcohol withdrawal syndrome. The benzodiazepine dosage is then tapered slowly over a period of days or weeks.

@clan: yeah stop posting. Ps, if yoou're physically addicted, there's obviously something in the substance that makes your body "rely on it". Unless you have first-hand knowledge about alcoholism, don't try to lecture me on how my mom wasn't relying on alcohol. She relied on it to make her feel better and for her problems to go away for the short time she was still awake while completely drunk.

@Emccky. Alcohol is an addictive substance in itself. Yes after you have consumed it for many years (even less) your body becomes acustomed to the chemicals in it and believe it is necissary to survive.Alcoholcs aren't pathetic, it is just a result of using the drug too much. No matter how much will power one may have, the drug is still in your blood and flowing through your body. It can happen to anyone, it just depends on who uses it responsibly or not.

@Clan. Alcohol is both physically and mentally addicting at the same time. Your body wants it, so your mind is only following your bodies orders. After taking it for a long time you begin to love it and rely on it. After taking it for quite some time your brain cells turn to ****, and you have no reason to quit anymore because you've forgotten what you are doing and it becomes a life style choice.

Anyways, yeah, Hope your mom gets better Jurs.

Allright, so both adam and Jur everyone else who read my post realized that I sort of posted without a fact to back myself up. I guess I've learned something though, which is good for health class, right?

As Dr. Phil says, "Anyone who believes they can use drugs and control them, rather than having them control you, is wrong" or something like that. It's very true.

I think you guys have some things wrong about it... considering alcohol is completely eliminated from your system within hours of consumption (not sure how many)

But yeah, alcohol is physically and psychologically addictive. It is a drug, if anyone tells you otherwise they're dumb as ****. Is it a drug I enjoy?

Also sertman, you don't need to get drunk, just drink 3-4 beers and you'll feel great but still have control over what you do.

edit: Actually, only drink 2 or so, maybe, because I know someone who is a fairly heavy drinker, also much heavier than myself, who gets drunk off HALF as much alcohol as it takes me. Seriously, he was rolling around on the floor after 4 drinks :\ I've never even been that drunk before.
