Anime is the French word for Cartoon. It is not Japanese. That is why there is an accent over the e (not shown here.)

Anime was just slang for "animated (video, cartoon, movie, series, etc)". It has no connotative meaning whatsoever by itself.

Both of you are wrong although Chard's definition is much closer than Halloween town's. Anime in French means animate.

Dragon Ball Z sux !!! It is NOT anime... Anime is drawn with high detail and definate style! DBZ is ugly and poorly done! it sux !!! I love anime, but DBZ is one of those shows that i cant stand! I admire anime for the extreme DETAIL which DBZ lacks in full. I say it again, it is not an anime, and is a crappy show anyways...

As for western cartoons and japanese Anime. I've watched plenty of both and there is big gap in style, technique, quality. Western made cartoon look as of they took a lot less effort to create, and in most cases it shows real well. Lately western cartoon took a plunge into the deeper hole and for the most part, I can't stand them now. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of bad Anime but there is so much more of the good. In Japan, Animation is pretty lucrative industry, in part of that there is plenty of high paying voice actors and they are celebrities just because of being a seiyuu in Japan. Do you see same thing in U.S.? I don't, ever wonder why dubs are so horrible? ;p

Cartoons = American television shows that are animated. ALWAYS ment to be humorous in some fashion.

Anime = Cartoon series from Japan that vary in genre. Drawing style is much different from american style animation as well.

I can name at least 5 that are showing or have been shown in just this and spring season that fit your general blurb. If you are talking about so called classics, it's not the fact that is classic, it probably isn't. It's the fact it's one of the 1st things of Anime that you've seen and that is just begginers impression "OMG they no longer make Anime liek they used to!" basically a BS in my view. maybe you got too used to it or watched too many. Because if you eat so much of the similar, you get sick of it, no matter how good. Moderation is important.

I always know something is anime by seeing if the persons eyes are huge and shiny. I also know if a show is anime because they have really wierd names.
