There were many scraps of metal and wood laying around the place. It didn't seem that Mark had cleaned the place in months, but that's perfectly fine. Jeff knew exactly what was what and, due to that, could piece together what he was planning on using to work with mark and get off this island once and for all.

Jeff looked into Mark's eyes and said, "do you have any idea what all these parts do?"
Mark replied "Not really, but that's why I brought you here."
Jeff smiled and Mark smiled back, and thus, they went to work.

Jeff gathered the materials, and Mark made the blueprints. A couple days passed, and they had a boat ready. Jeff was still working on his machine. It was a glorious contraption; made of spare brass and scrap lying around the place.

Mark went up to Jeff one day after he'd finished sanding the hull and asked him, playfully, "what's this do?"
Jeff, with all the enthusiasm he could muster, replied gleefully, "oh this? It cloaks our location from the trackers around the island. If they can't see us, we can get out."

After this exchange, Jeff tinkered a bit. Having been almost done with the machine for a couple days now, he's nearing the end. Mark had just finished making the boat, and all that was required was the power source (which had come beforehand), and Jeff's machinery.

And after another day, it was time. Jeff affixed the wiring and power source to the boat, making sure no water could access it. Mark planned the route they would take with what little resources they had, and now all they had to do was push the boat out to sea.

With the boat out to sea, Jeff looked at Mark, with stars in his eyes.
"Mark. Thank you for sticking with me, and thank you for helping me escape."
Mark looked back with an even more wistful look, putting his hands in Jeff's.
"You're welcome. And thank you for sticking with me. Without you I wouldn't have been able to do all this.

Jeff and Mark looked in each other's eyes for a long time. Hand-in-hand, they made the final push out to sea, and hopped in the boat. Off they were, in the open sea. The cloaking device activated, and they were finally free.

After an hour or so of silence, Mark finally broke the ice.

"Jeff, I didn't want to say it at first, but... I feel I've grown as a person because of you. I was a loner, and never talked to anyone much before this. Thank you."

And Jeff had something to say to Mark as well.

"Thank you, too. I was in the same situation as you for the longest time, and seeing someone with the same mindset as me really helped me come out of my shell."

And so, they both lived happily ever after. They found a new, more welcoming island. The inhabitants were friendly, and as Mark and Jeff adjusted to their new life, they grew closer to each other as friends. Maybe even more than just friends, if you wish to infer that.

And with that, our story closes. Jeff and Mark escaped the island, they grew as people, and they lived happily ever after. platonically, of course.
