      Re: Jan/Feb 2020 Set 3

Apologies for the delay. Wasn't feeling it and having to go up against two longer songs was a bit rough.

      Headbangers Ballroom (storn42) [7/10]
      Judge Notes:
      - introduction might be better quantized 8ths/16ths for accenting since there’s nothing really driving a triplet structure; not a big deal, though
      - two things about this chart: 1.) it’s got reasonable relevance and is pretty clearly followed, and 2.) it’s quite dull; the dullness for me comes the structure being generally repeated throughout despite the song having some pretty strong changes in power between verses and the chorus
      - this song desperately needs some work on accenting power - the chart generally doesn’t do much beyond rudimentary accenting of snares and rarely, cymbal crashes.
----- 49.063 to 49.684 is a great example of properly accenting things with the power that the song calls for, with 49.684 ending on a cymbal crash after some 24th notes, and the accenting at 2:12.235/etc is absolutely explosive (in a great way). With that kind of tightness in steps (in comparison to the rest of the chart), you could absolutely afford to add much more accenting throughout.
      - 3:01.268: it took me this long to detect you used the recolorizer, lol
      - guitar solo can use some work in terms of rhythms/flavor -- even ignoring the tremolo throughout the sustained notes, there are some grace notes that can be added for improvement
      - 3:33.337: for this sequence, notes from 3:33.544 to 3:33.958 should be 24th notes (as per your structure)
      - 3:40.371: add jump
      - 3:43.061/etc: ignoring the hi-hats? Suppose it’s acceptable to do if we’re just terminating the section on the guitar note since it’s a loud sustain.
      - 4:31.267: for a strong visual impact, double the BPM here. The percussion is playing double time with the kick/snare doubling in speed.
      - this is not a bad chart by any means; it has generally effective pitch relevance and it’s pretty clear what’s going on throughout; it just needs more work being brought out. You’ve got sections in here with pretty aggressive difficulty spikes (justified, I might add) that give you the capability to basically buff the extraneous parts of the chart without increasing the difficulty any further.

      Alive (psychoangel691) [7.5/10]
      Judge Notes:
      - offset looks good
      - 1:31.777: oof. I get it, but that’s rude.
      - some PR issues existing from the original [Heavy] are present but nothing’s really glaring
      - a few slight misrhythms present in the previous [Heavy] chart were fixed, neato
      - layering is solid; a few rough transitions but they’re fair - 5 note [LR] jump jack early is nasty starting with a triple but it also makes sense so I’m not against it
      - last stream could have some better patterning
      - likely would qualify for an [Oni] tag; chart is noticeably harder in terms of burst usage/abrasion
      - solid chart, would make for a good token

        Re: Jan/Feb 2020 Set 3

Intro has been requantized. somehow in the entire issue of "what quantization should i use in this song" this idea never came up, where one of my main issues was that intro.
3:01.268 - i have a strange feeling its suddenly going to be more noticeable with the new intro.
        3:33.337 - fixed.
        3:40.371 - done
        3:43.061 - yes.

I have some things i have questions/need feedback on:

Guitar solo - i honestly have no idea what grace notes you are talking about.

4:31.267 - i dont think this works as well as i'd like it to. The color of this section has always bothered me but i think i know the issue. You have this 3/4 rhythm over a 6/8 rhythm, which gives this section a weird chaotic polyrhythm style feel. you can really feel the 2/3 poly rhythm with the drums vs keyboard here and doubling the bpm takes that away. Doubling also hides the keyboard notes entirely. i could do some weird coloring for the keyboard notes while also doubling the bpm. another idea would be to 3x (6x?) the bpm so its just 4ths and 8ths. im not really sure what the best idea to do here is. for now im going to play it safe and not change it.

Chorus - i have an idea for a buff, but it makes the chorus super dense (maybe overchart?). essentially its focusing on the guitar on one hand and drums on the other. it gives a different feel and isn't too hard, though i fear it might be too much of a buff compared to the rest of the song.

I dream of the day when i can chart something and not have an issue be that i cant hear cymbals. I'm going to go through and add them in where i feel appropriate. Doing this for other sounds in sections i feel appropriate as well.

        0:10.161, 1:31.884 - more cymbal
        0:24.850 - jumps for drums
        0:50.298 - added hands
        1:02.298 - more cymbal
        1:27.593 - more cymbal
2:14.711 - Added jumps for crashes
        2:39.538, 4:11.399 - more cymbal fun
        3:19.261 - more cymbal/ i think i missed some snare
2:59.400 - reworked section for better cymbal
        3:39.123 - added hands
3:48.433 - new jump. repatterned next jumps
        4:18.019 - missing note lol.
        4:21.329 - more cymbal

          Re: Jan/Feb 2020 Set 3

I don't quite agree that there's a polyrhythmic structure musically at 4:31.267 - everything still lines up perfectly on a 4/4 time signature with a doubled BPM. Crash cymbals land on beats 1 and then 1/3 every two measures, and snares land on beats 2 and 4 through the entirety of the section.

The background guitar and ride land at the same time the entirety of the section, playing quarter note triplets (6th notes) until it concludes at at 4:41.198.

Kicks of course would be running straight 12ths this entire time.

          Code:
          c = crash, s = snare, r = ride, g = guitar
          [C][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ] | [C][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ] | [C][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ]
          [ ][ ][ ] | [S][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ] | [S][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ] | [S][ ][ ] | [ ][ ][ ] | [S][ ][ ]
          [R][ ][R] | [ ][R][ ] | [R][ ][R] | [ ][R][ ] | [R][ ][R] | [ ][R][ ] | [R][ ][R] | [ ][R][ ]
          [G][ ][G] | [ ][G][ ] | [G][ ][G] | [ ][G][ ] | [G][ ][G] | [ ][G][ ] | [G][ ][G] | [ ][G][ ]
As far as the point of the instrumental notes being hidden, that is a very fair defense of keeping the colors the way they are. All of them fall on 24ths while the percussion works around it, so that is technically an effective leveraging of structure. Not a required change, and it's good that you actually considered that.

red vector acid minute went through a lot of frame fixes and some patterning changes - since it's in conditional queue could i get a word on the new changes from the judge if time allows?

Sent fixes for The Basement Guitarist according to your notes. The issue with switching seemingly arbitrarily between 8ths and 12ths has been fixed.

              Additionally,
-9.522 is now a white note so the accenting is more consistent
-a jump has been added at 21.145
-the note at 56.661 was removed for consistency.

                Per Halogen:

A Firebrand, An Agitator: looks good now. - accepted

Morning Run: while most of the finer details seem to have been worked on, I do still feel like there are a number of questionable repeating notes that occasionally stand out (10.643, 14.183, 22.441 [incorrectly placed], 23.958 [poor hand distribution], 29.014, etc). It might be good to take another pass and make sure you're cleaning out any indicated repetitions that don't exist, but it does look better and I think it's at least good enough. - accepted

Red Vector Acid Minute: playing these side by side, it looks noticeably better to me. - accepted

Starflight: Initial CQ point resolved; however, chart remains in CQ status because there are still BPMs referencing later times in the mp3 that you have cut out, which may produce improper metadata for length. Please remove any BPM data that falls outside of the running time of the song. - conditional

The Basement Guitarist: much better! - accepted

Looked it over and I removed the repetition you mentioned and an additional instance of it. If there's one thing that is becoming clear about my stepping style is that I love repetition/minijacks. I've uploaded the latest version to the batch.
