I'd agree that it's overhyped and that the cult following isn't really justified.. Not sure why it happened, I think the fact that Nintendo released it and advertised the hell out of it to little success contributes to that tho

Like a game with great success never gets a cult following, it's largely due to it being "underrated"

Also I know it's irrelevant to the game itself but earthbound soundtrack is veryyyy good, the music inspired many artists tbh, I'm a big fan of starship amazing

I think its an amazing game , but it has its flaws, mostly rooted in sticking to conventional and outdated mechanics of older rpgs despite breaking away from other tropes and aspects of them. (especially the menuing. the menuing is fucking awful in mother 1 and 2)

I get what you mean
Having to switch items around between players can get irritating even though it's logical that Jeff can't use a bottle rocket that Paula is holding
And limited inventory space is of course just a system limitation

I also remember not being able to buy multiple of the same item at a time, but that may have just been mother 1. its been a while since I've played it

Night in the woods is a fantastic game with one of the worst endings of all time
Hanging out with socialists and criminals wasn't great either but the rest is A+
