Anyone remember how Kaz Ishii got hit a few years back while playing for the Dodgers?

Ouch, kinda make chess look like a good passtime...

Unlike Squeek i enjoy reading things like this that people (mostly bmx) post. I think its interesting to hear about stuff that i would otherwise miss. Half the things posted on here i don't get to hear about in the UK or Asia (wherever i am at the time) so it is nice to be kept up to date). If you don't want to know about them, don't read them, simple.
      Please keep it up.

You don't have to be a pitcher to be hit by a baseball. This past spring, and I believe some people on FFR know this, I was hit hit right next to my left eye. I didn't have enough time to react as well. When I was hit, the impact literally lifted me off my feet and layed motionless for 5 minutes. In other words, I was knocked unconcious. Right before the ambulance showed up, I woke up. The paramedics cleaned me up at the field and soon enough in the next half inning I was up, batting in my spot and back on the field, still playing. After the game, I went to the hospital and got 6 stitches. That was a scary moment for me and for everyone else. There was still 3-4 games left but there was no hesitation. I played those games as I told my coach, my dad, and the President of BATB I will play....And I did.

Actually, I don't want to read about FFR. About 90% of the regulars here stopped playing FFR long ago.

And I've played about 16 seasons of Baseball. Not only that, I was the team's MVP for many of them. I held the record for most homeruns in my district for a while. I love the sport, I hate watching it.

It's just that news is totally worthless. Hey, someone near me just got arrested for having 200 cats in their house, with over 160 of them dead! Did I post about it? Why do you think that is? Is it because she's not "famous"?

Oh no guys, Brad Pitt is getting married again! NEWS.

All I'm saying is that what happens to one individual that you otherwise couldn't care less about should not be newsworthy. Kinda like Schiavo. The only people who should have cared about that in the first place were her family and doctor. The Governor getting involved blew everything out of proportion and caused me an insane amount of grief when it was ALL I EVER HEARD ABOUT.

RE: Re: Matt Clement Hit By Line Drive

BMX... how on earth do you get hit in the face by a baseball at any position OTHER than pitcher. You must have some bad reflexes. There is zero excuse to get hit in the face when playing more than 60 feet away.

About the only situation I can think of is: Little League with 60 feet bases... you expect someone to bunt... you're playing 3rd base and are in front of the base to cover said bunt. Hitter doesn't bunt... swings... and clocks you in the face. But, at the same time... the ball (by simple physics) is not traveling NEARLY as fast as one hit by a MLB player... aka... it wasn't thrown near 90+ mph, nor was the bat speed fast enough to have it come back at 100+ mph. All this leads me to again say that you have to be an idiot to get hit in the face by a baseball when playing a position OTHER than pitcher. You are simply too far away to be unable to react.

I definately can see it happening.... the same way I can see a fly ball landing on someone's head... sheer stupidity or lack of skills.

RE: Re: Matt Clement Hit By Line Drive

Tass, there are lots of ways.

                2 examples happened to me.

I was playing second base, and there was a runner on first. The guy hits a grounder somewhere between first and second, closer to first. The first baseman runs and gets the ball as I stand ready on second. The only problem is the runner is directly in the way of my vision. So the first baseman throws the ball, and the runner slides headfirst. As soon as the runner is out of the way, the ball is right in front of me, and it nails me in the eye. Ouch.

Also, ever heard of a bad bounce? Happens A LOT.

RE: Re: Matt Clement Hit By Line Drive

A couple years back I was playing pitcher and this really bad batter came up. I threw a fastball, and in his haste to hit it, the bat flew out of his hands (he swung at his full power, I could tell) and nailed me in the chest.

                  Ow? I think yes.

I don't know Squeek I see where you're coming from but you didnt have to put down british and then correct two other people's spelling. I as well as a lot of other people found the article interesting. Don't you think you should just go on to the next topic for now on if you see the topic is by britishbmx?

RE: Re: Matt Clement Hit By Line Drive

Tank: neither of those are line drives from the batter. They are both possible ways to get hit by a baseball while not being a pitcher... but if I wasn't clear... my whole rant was directed on A BALL BEING HIT DIRECTLY FROM THE HITTER IN THE AIR AT A FIELDER.

Being hit by your own teammate... also possible, but you should be able to move your body so that that doesn't happen. Positioning is KEY. And, yes... bad hops happen. Not too much you can do about those... still not too often it'll hop back up off the infield grass into your noggin. your glove should be in the way of that happening regardless. Without proper fundamentals, anything is possible. Its why baseball should be taught with fundamentals first... and power/flash second. Having your feet in the right place and having your glove in the correct position are key fundamentals to proper baseball and would likely prevent 99% of all of these examples. There are always crazy flukes.

I laughed the minute I saw the ball bounce off his head. This reminded me of a time when after the ball was a hit, a bird flew in front of it, got hit, and it's feathers literaly exploded off its body.

jcj: that wasn't what happened... it was Randy Johnson about 10 years ago. He threw a pitch, a bird flew in front of it... bird got hit by the 100 mph fastball and "exploded"

he faced some sort of legal ramifications, I believe. From some animal rights organization... absurd.

It all comes down to this. If Matt was playing for the Cubs, this wouldn't have happened.

Haha... Synth. If Clement was still playing for the Cubs, this WOULD still happen... but it would happen in the playoffs and be their "curse" for the year to destroy their hopes of being the Red Sox.
