Re: Youtube to buy Twitch for $1 billion

It's been a long ass time since I studied this for the net+ exam, but basically from what I remember, the entire infrastructure for what would become the start of the Internet was laid out by government funding through ARPANET for research purposes between universities and communication between military bases. It was initially laid out as an unsecure (by today's standards) telnet, spawning the need for TCP/IP protocols (big list of different pieces of software that tell the different components of the Internet how to do things, particularly in a fast and secure way).

Pretty much the simplest terms I can explain it to those who don't know the history of the internet, which is pretty blatant from what I've read from people's comments on here lol.

FCC's push for a "Fast Lanes" proposal is really bad news for enterprising Internet users and small business owners because it allows ISPs to create a tiered charging system for different speeds based on the type of content you are downloading. For example, Netflix is really against this because they are a stream - based network, and they're already being throttled like a new born baby trying to grasp for air. Imagine what Comcast could do with Carte-Blanche access to do whatever they want with regard to charging Netflix additional premiums to be able to utilize their infrastructure for streaming.

EDIT: Another thing worth mentioning is this would ultimately jack up prices to use said services from those providers. Secondly, this makes it harder for small business Joe Shmoe ISP startups to launch and provide cheaper services than Comcast because they as well could (and will) be charged to utilize their infrastructure to provide for customers.

After seeing what Google did to YouTube after the acquisition, imagine what kind of crazy shit we might run into with Twitch. Some of the people here that are posting what to expect after this are more or less on the right track. Moving to a different streaming site is easy for you to say as consumers, but for people who own twitch channels, that is not so easy. You basically have to completely rebuild your entire fucking user base to make as much money as before.

Basically this whole thing is about eliminating competition, jacking up prices, and controlling the flow of information. And there are still more reasons I haven't even begun to expound upon as to why this whole situation is fucked up rofl.

Just be a grown ass adult for once this time, contact your people, or welcome your new Internet Overlords. Lol

I'm also just going to be frank and say there needs to be a sticky about this posted by the admins.

Re: Youtube to buy Twitch for $1 billion

TBH Twitch was and still is pretty bad, maybe being owned by Google (who owns youtube) isn't such a bad thing. The mobile app is garbage and can't watch highlights/non-live twitch videos, and though it probably won't change, the staff are a bunch of drama llamas. Maybe there will be better tools for highlighting videos/cutting from multiple highlights to put stuff on youtube.

Its popular because its easy to use and has virtually no competition. Its not like they can make the ads any worse based on youtubes model, the worst thing that will probably happen is a retarded layout change every 4-6 months NOBODY ASKS FOR. I'm sure they aren't going to try forcing Google+ account integration again after the backlash from youtube, but it may be different on the back end requiring a google ad-sense account to get payed for ad revenue. (Not sure if its any different right now actually)

Actually, because of its integration with a wide variety of applications. It has an app for the PS4 for example, which is a plus.

I seriously hope Twitch won't accept Google/Youtube's deal. It would be like when Disney purchased Star Wars around 18 months ago.

Google's new "layouts" are slower, have more clutter, and therefore are very annoying to use. Look at what happened to Youtube, look at what happened to Google Maps. What was once a website that emphasized simplicity over complexity has now turned into a group of poorly-designed ones that are, frankly, not worth navigating. I personally find Twitch a lot easier to go around, which is why I wouldn't want them to be bought out.

Don't turn Twitch into another stupid "one of them" with takedown notices on the best streams/videos. Life sucks, that is all.

Re: Youtube to buy Twitch for $1 billion

To be honest my only qualm with this would be some sort of infringement on people's abilities to stream what they want. I don't think aesthetically the changes would be too detrimental, nor would the performance suffer a huge loss. They understand what the service is used for, and unless they are trying to kill it (which is dumb because there's virtually no competition) I doubt they would let it drown. It may suffer a tad but I don't foresee a huge loss by this purchase.

In fact, I'm somewhat eager to see what kinds of integration you'll end up with between the platforms. TwitchTube, your personal twitch stream located ON your YouTube channel? Yes please, that would eliminate an entire step out of the process of building support AND promoting your channels. That would be badass, and with the integration of Google/YouTube, it would be totally possible if they acquired Twitch. I think you all are being too pessimistic about it.
