$100 can get you a digital camera with probably around a 14~20 megapixel lens, which is more than sufficient if you only know how to point and shoot, and use it only on certain occasions. I bought a Canon Powershot SD1400IS a couple years back (taking note that digital cameras now are better in specs). I guess sample photos below, although there is some minor photo editing work done to them to correct light balance and sharpening.

If you already had a DSLR I'd say $100 could go towards the 50mm f/1.8 lens (canon or nikon, w/e).

As far as digital cameras under the $100 range... idk man. There are just so many to choose from, watch for colour fringing and pointless noise removal filters hard wired into the camera that could potentially ruin most of your photos.

Look for manual settings, aperture control, and a macro mode, other than that you kind of have to assess for yourself. The megapixels might not matter for your purposes unless you do intend to print a bunch of your shit.

The camera that got me started was a Canon Powershot A720 IS, which had pretty good depth of field and macro mode for such an oldish camera. I loved it. Searching for older model cameras might be more of a pain in the ass but honestly you'll prolly get more benefit out of something with tighter controls/image quality than a large megapixel range with lackluster photos. (that camera on ebay is like from $40 to $60 from what I see lol)

^all in the editing lol but still. HDR is possible with an old camera that doesn't shoot in a lossless format.



The macro was the high point of this camera for me though.

So I guess my recommendation is getting what would be the older models of today's $500+ range digital point 'n shoots. If the size of the photo doesn't matter as much to you (just going to be posting it online and such) then it's deff looking into. Smaller images and smaller zoom range is pretty much the biggest real difference between the then-top of the line and now-top of the lines. Avoid gimmicks.

Depends on your phone. My phone takes pretty good pictures. Not ultra high res but they are clear and crisp.
