We make lour selves feel superior by driving others to feel inferior
Oh, how wrong can you be! Benefits don't come from a fixed pie, my darling. Instead, they come just pile on. That's the beauty of of the Free Market (Adam Smith in Wealth of Nations). In fact, I often find myself walking away from a transaction going "heh heh heh, I sure ripped that sucker off." I'm positive that half of the time, the other participant in the trade is saying the exact same thing to themselves.
So no, we don't make others feel inferior. By becoming superior we give them the benefit of another incentive: to work to become superior. To no longer be inferior in comparison to us.
On a side note: I'll be home tomorrow and using my own computer. I'll be happy to add to this thread as much as I can then. Until then, I won't be able to post for a while. Someone please sum up Smithian beliefs to Sera when they get the chance. Thank you, and have a day filled with pineapples.
Q, your Speaking the truth as well as i am, I was not by any means saying The only way for us to make our selves feel superior is by making other feeling inferior, It was a simple statement. You and i both should know that Theres many occasions where this is true. Such as the jocky kid picking on one of the nerds in the middle of the hall way INFRONT OF EVERYONE POSSIBLE. Have you ever seen the movie bang bang you're dead? most of this movie consist of proving my point. People constantly pick on others to make them selves look better to others and to prove superiority over the other.
However, On your side of the disscussion...
EDIT:
the division of labour. which derives so many advantages, is not originally the effect of any human wisdom which foresees and intends the opulence to which it gives rise; it is rather the gradual result of the tendency in human nature to barter and exchange one thing for another. In the end every person in the System is playing off another person in the system for their personal sense of seperiorty regaurdless of it The other is bennifting the same or is loosing out.
and thats my two cents for the night becuase im really begining to get sleepy, and im loosing my points really bad.. espcially towards the end there.
one last thing, for gods sake Q may call me Sarah, please, not sera..
Sorry to be a little off-shoot, but have you ever seen an alien movie where the aliens ACTUALLY win?
The new one, where they try to make her forget about her son... These beings are far superior, but still, somehow the humans win.
Then there was planet of the apes, and a few others. Even our movies talk about our own infallibility.
"Signs" is an incredible display of this. A technologically advanced culture that can jump 30 feet in the air, flatten crops in a matter of seconds, and secret poison gas, can be taken out by 2 men.
They are ALSO able to be taken out by something as simple as water. Are they trying to say something about our own superiority in this? That even with all their technology, they wouldn't know that 70% of the planet is toxic to them? That the toxin is needed for all the organisms to survive? Someone needs to go back to the movie drawingboards.

Hah, yeah! Including the fact that the aliens wouldn't even be able to enter our atmosphere due to air humidity! Then again, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0796117/, the director doesn't exactly have a track-record of phenomenal creative abilities.
