Re: This is my first post. AMA.

well i'm at university so all i have to play on is a crappy laptop keyboard that has a mind of its own and likes to randomly miss notes and split jumps. if i signed up i'd probably be borderline/low d2, especially since i placed well in tc halogen's tournament, but placements don't take into account what keyboard you play on. also i was overloaded with work for the whole of last month so i could only bring myself to play for about an hour each week. (i spent more than that getting my round 4 score though) so basically i'd have been out in round 2.

also i did a levelrank compare and found out that if tc halogen's tournament was combo scoring i would have won d1. i now have an eternal grudge against raw scoring tournaments.

rofl. that's brutal (both the keyboard and the raw scoring dilemma).

what are you studying at university?

this subforum is a place i go to when i'm bored and have some time to kill. to be honest i don't usually go on ffr unless i actively want to waste time (except for when i'm involved in some contest or something), and it's just a sort of fun thing to do besides, i just love random questions, whether it's people asking me, or me asking people to see what kind of responses i get.

if you were to invent the next Olympic sport, what would you name said sport?

Do you find it odd that there seems to be very, very few British players on ffr/sm? Most in the this sort of community still seem stuck in the ddr days.

dAnceguy117: so i have to first invent a sport, then name it? sounds tricky... ok. so i'll invent a sport where you run 400 metres with banana peel all over the floor. (banana skins have been proven by mythbusters to be slippery when you run on them.) and just to mess with people's minds i'll call it "grapefruit", for absolutely no reason at all. ... actually, yeah it doesn't matter what i'll invent, i'll just call it grapefruit to confuse everyone.

squeesfan: yeah i've noticed the lack of british players on this forum, i just attributed it to the fact that in general a large forum may have trouble opening up to an international crowd if the vast majority of content comes from usa/canada, as in it may be a little intimidating to outsiders. i mean, take reddit for example, i don't really get the american in-jokes that you see hogging the top comment spots. also i think most of the music here is american based, except the japanese stuff and the classical piano stuff. just my thoughts though, i might be totally wrong but this is definitely the case in some other large forums i've seen.
i'm new to this whole rhythm gaming scene and don't expect to get fully immersed into it at any time, i don't really know what you mean by "ddr days", did ddr used to be a big thing internationally in the past?

good question. ddr was huge in Japan and the United States about a decade ago. arcades have all but disappeared in the States, but they live on in Japan. I don't really know about any other country, though. do you remember seeing many of the arcade machines in past years?

haha i didn't even know what ddr was until like 2 years ago, you can call me uncultured :P let me see... since then i've seen 2 or 3 at bournemouth pier, and i saw 1 in an arcade at a ski resort in france, but that's it. i barely passed a seven footer on it if i remember correctly. i'll keep a look out for them

ham. turkey tastes all too papery and dry and a little boring, and ham is more versatile

you might be in the minority on the ham > turkey call. those are good reasons though.

the youtube link in your sig no longer works. what's your take on copyright laws in the age of the internet? if you're not a fan, how do you think those laws could be refined?

Re: This is my first post. AMA.

sorry for late reply i had to research this stuff before commenting on it.

internet copyright law relies far too much on semantics. at a skim read it kind of reminds me of little kids wasting time quabbling around on the internet about definitions, as they do. but the difference is that for these purposes you have to draw the line SOMEWHERE, wherever it may be. what i think the problem is, is that there's far too much subjectivity in what constitutes fair use, and we need firstly to make these definitions more concrete, and secondly to make people aware of what they are. that shouldn't solve the problem but after that i have literally no clue how to change things, i know it's dodging the question a bit but i can't solve the world's problems :P

ok, a bunch of examples. i wasn't around for olga but i heard about its demise. so apparently writing your own personal (i.e. not nicked from a book) interpretation of the chords of a song and putting it on the internet violates copyright, what the hell. the whole debate was a semantics issue about whether personal interpretations count as fair use, which sounds really petty and stupid. i mean a blobfish trained in music theory could easily work out chords for some songs. just the fact that the site was up for 10 years before someone decided it was illegal is ridiculous. (i think the same service is currently available at ultimate guitar which is russia based so nobody can touch it)

another thing. how many notes can you nick off a song before it stops being fair use and goes into illegal territory? kind of a dumb question, stephen schwartz once said it's 8, but i think he was making stuff up. what about if it's only accidentally used quietly in the background of a video? then apparently you can get away with 29 seconds if you're willing to go through 3 years of arguing about definitions. how pixellated do you have to make a photo before it becomes public domain? the fact that people are arguing about the numbers in the comments speaks for itself.

yeah as far as i can see all of this boils down to people bullshitting about word definitions. if they could be made clearer, not like exact numbers of notes from a song, but general guidelines that EVERYONE knows, things ought to improve.

also, incorrectly issued takedown notices are a thing. youtube is far too fast to take down stuff on an accusation without proof. i'm too lazy to link things but i remember nyan cat was allegedly briefly taken down from youtube by its owner for copyright which is completely wrong. besides i frequently see whole videos/accounts being taken down and then put back up again and taken down again and put back up again and infinite loop.

oh and i forgot to mention piracy. i don't ever see music/films/bananas not ever being pirated, the piracy industry is so enormously gargantuan there's no way we can ever change how it is. it's just here to stay. (and no i don't pirate any media or fruit before you ask)

p.s. i was really, really, really, lethargically, mind-numbingly bored when i wrote this and i don't really have that much of an opinion over the whole thing, i'm literally just writing for the sake of it. i've changed my signature youtube link so it works

to me, that's super impressive. being able to go off on a well-articulated tirade concerning a topic you don't actually care a whole lot about is a real sign of a good debater and a logical thinker. I basically agree with everything you said. will come up with a better response later hopefully hahaha.
