Yea, you should have used 3.5 or (lower?); its important to make sure the entire "face" is in focus (right now the eyes are blurred out, there is not as much "impact" to it as it should)

Yep, live 'n learn. Still, that did a pretty remarkable job at 2.8 I must say I think more than anything I wanted to see what I could do with shooting primarily at 2.8, seeing what ways I could find around it if some details were being lost. It's a really fun lens, I'm glad I got a full days' worth of practice with it! And yes, more to come.

Again, wishing I had more than the f/2.8 on this one but DAMN what it did capture was sharp even at 100% crop

Then again, if I had the wing in focus I would have preferred to be zoomed out a slight bit more and perhaps get the branch it was sitting on out of focus instead.

Curious as to how you manage to get a near microscopic image of a iris/ salt cubes?.
Only thing I can think of is if you used a telephoto with a macro tube + flash ring.

It's an upgrade to my other macro lens. Sold that one for this, it's definitely close to microscopic at full zoom. Other macro lenses go 1:1 maximum, or 2:1 with an extension tube; this one can go up to 5:1 zoom.
