As a budding web developer, I've thought about trying my hand at Wordpress theming. However, I've heard that it's deceptively complicated and not worth the effort. For some projects, it would probably be quicker to design a new blog system from scratch rather than try to work around Wordpress's system. If this project is important to you, I would engage a wordpress developer to do the work for you.
I know it's not the response you want, but it's the response I'm going to give.
