It's not madness -- it's called being rational and utility-maximizing. You don't get either one through religion.
I would say, though, that the analogy is flawed. It's not as "debatable" as me thinking a color is yellow versus someone else saying it's black, as if both views "could be equally valid" and it comes down to personal interpretation.
It's more like if we both showed up to the scene of a crime where we find DNA evidence, fingerprints, evidence leading us to the suspect, bits of clothing that perfectly match the holes in the suspect's clothing, video surveillance showing the murderer entering the house and then firing the gun, ballistics substantiation, blood spatter consistency, multiple independent eye witness testimonies, footprint evidence, etc -- only to have someone say "I don't really think he did it -- it could have been Leprechauns who did all this. The evidence doesn't convince me."
There are only two conclusions that one can draw -- either the naysayer is ignorant of the evidence and methods of interpreting the evidence itself, or he's insane.
For people who know what they're talking about, naysayers come across as extremely frustrating to deal with. Most of them just stick their fingers in their ears when you attempt to explain the evidence to them. People will believe whatever the heck they want as long as it suits them.
And so, for me, when people say "Hey, screw the evidence, I want to believe what I want," it becomes even more frustrating when those people take it a step further with "Because I believe in such and such, I am going to start shoving it into everywhere that I can, even if it causes problems for you."
That's how religious people come across to me. Ignorant and arrogant. And yet theists are the ones who typically accuse atheists of "being closeminded and arrogant" when the exact opposite is true. Atheists are generally atheists *because* they are openminded and they *embrace* ignorance and don't try to cover it up with snake oil. How would you feel if I *insisted* that the Earth was flat and that you were arrogant/dismissive to tell me any differently? That's how it feels when people try to push forth the idea that the Earth/mankind was created by God or that we have a higher purpose. The evidence suggests other conclusions -- it's just that most people don't have a firm grasp of the evidence at that level.Comment
