Re: Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan

I myself donated $1000.00 to the Red Cross two days or so ago.
And I'm like woo good karma comin' my way homiez
Problem is, it put me over my ATM spending limit and froze my bank account for the rest of the month. So, since my payday isn't till the next Friday after this one, I have to live off of 15 bucks for the next two weeks. Unce Unce
    ****ing capitalism.

depends on the organisation. red cross is usually good for managing funds

I gave it to some waps on the side of the street in boston oups. but i'll be giving more to red cross (canadian red cross if they decide to get involved) once I can. 1000 deserves a ****ing medal.

Hey now, I figured most FFR members are american, and everyone knows where NYC is and approximately how large lower Manhattan is, so why not drop it there?

I couldn't even graph my favorite one. There's something called a Starquake, which is actually an earthquake on a neutron star. Apparently, measurements of one happening suggest the equivalent energy yield is around a quadrillion times more than the asteroid.

To put that in perspective, it would destroy the Earth. The gamma radiation emitted from the quake would annihilate everything in the solar system and surrounding systems.

                Super fun stuff

                Anyway,

According to a nuclear scientists on CNN, he said that the term "meltdown" was used incorrectly and that a "meltdown" hasn't really occurred. He said the term "meltdown" is used to describe when the fuel rods themselves melt, which supposedly hasn't happened yet.

I'm getting sick of all these contradicting facts. -_-
I didn't major in physics, but I took a lot of physics in university, and I can safely say that I've never heard the word 'meltdown' used as a technical term. It can mean a bunch of different things in the physics community. The news press is mostly misusing it as a hype word to scare people into watching the story.

As far as I can tell, the experts in Japan agree that things are under control right now.

Discuss. For my part, this is disgusting. It's like we accomplished nothing as human beings for the past hundreds of years.
It must be a level. She can't be serious.

I wonder how many religious people died in this quake.

At least one pastor was killed. I saw it on the news. Maybe he was a pedophile?

I'd prefer the video to not exist on the Internet.

Re: Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan

More explosions in reactor 1/2/4, fires in reactor 4. Prime Minister addressing country, evac zone increased.

"Please listen to my message calmly....every possible method has been used to cool down the reactors. However, for reactor 1 and 2, hydrogen have come out causing explosion. Reactor 4 we have seen fire.... and radiation has spread from these reactors. And the readings of the levels seem very high. And there is still very high risk of more radioactive material coming out.."

"....We need everyone from 20km from the power plant 1 to evacuate.....everyone near #2 Power Plant within 10km please move out. We are trying everything we can to make sure further radioactive leakage does not occur. Workers injecting seawater are putting themselves at extreme danger in trying to prevent further leakage." This ends the Prime Minister's speech

Reactor 2's reactor container core has been breached and radiation levels are increasing. The real problem here seems to be that seawater was being pumped into this container, and now that it has ruptured the seawater can only cover 2.7 meters of the 4 meter fuel rods, so cooling is even harder now.

Officials now reporting that a vapor is coming from the top of Reactor 3. They are unsure of what this vapor/smoke is.

The fires in reactor 4, which wasn't operational at the time of the earthquake, were caused by exposed spent fuel rods emitting hydrogen, starting fire and explosions and spewing radiation everywhere.

Edit:1137pm CT Apparently the fire in Reactor 4 has been extinguished.

As for the other reactor, well, =/

The radiation levels are not that high yet though, for the record. Even within the plant, based on reported levels of 20 MSV per hour, you would have to spend over 50 hours inside the plant itself to be in any danger.

Either way, what has happened is essentially worst case scenario as far as modern nuclear reactors go. The only way this could possibly get worse would be if molten corium or liquid core get into the ground and contaminate the ground water.

This is the kind of stuff that creates hysteria around an otherwise very safe and efficient source of power =/

It's a terrible situation by the looks of it. Hoping for the best!

reactor 2 is pretty much ****ed for right now. I keep seeing meaningless radiation reports like, 8 TIMES AS MUCH RADIATION wow compared to what asshole

I finally found a figure though: 8,217 microsievert/hour, which is 8 times the annual limit. The annual is low enough that yeah, that's somewhat weak radiation, but it's still pretty unhealthy.

edit: I guess it wildly fluctuates. 8,217 is the peak radiation so far, but radiation levels are currently below the minimum level required to a mandatory incident report.
