That's all I was confused about, not necessarily about a "nuclear explosion."

As for the "funny" thing, I don't really understand what about it is funny. At first I thought it was a citation joke, but when I read it fully, it's about... the earthquake vs. the bomb???? Are you laughing at the comparison made between the earthquake and bomb? I still don't see how it's funny, personally.
Oh, no, that's not what I meant. Simple misunderstanding then. Of course an explosion could happen, I just wanted to point out that a nuclear explosion was not possible (Many people think that it is).

I said it was impossible for a 'meltdown' (not really a technical term in physics) to occur. I stated later that I was wrong, but didn't edit my post. That is all.

Technically I wasn't wrong though. It's not possible under normal circumstances, because of the safety precautions built directly into Japanese power plants to prevent it from happening in the first place.

However, when you have an earthquake that is so strong it potentially destroys the safety precautions, then it becomes a possibility. Hence, my correction.

It's funny because I thought it was bull to be honest, reach. But, after reading that along with countless other articles, I was amazed. You learn something new everyday.

I mean, put it into perspective, two Atomic Bombs wiped out a lot of people and towns and everything. Putting that to an earthquake to someone who doesn't research science, it would have seemed foolish. But, alas, I was wrong lol
I re-edited the post with graphical proof of a conversion of the earthquake into an explosion when compared to the Hiroshima Atom bomb:

Japan Earthquake converted to an explosion: http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/gmap/...00&zm=9&op=156 . Here, however, is the Hiroshima bomb: http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/gmap/...1&zm=12&op=156

I slept in bio class in Gr. 12, and also my chem class never went into the nuclear reaction topic (as far as I remember).
I only get a tad bit of what you are saying xd

Holy shit reach that explosion conversion shows my house an hour away from NYC being pretty much destroyed with a 2psi shockwave, which I assume means insta-death for all people within. That's terrifying.

edit: and apparently all the glass in several states will shatter

I'm glad people don't make 1,000,000 megaton nuclear bombs.

According to a nuclear scientists on CNN, he said that the term "meltdown" was used incorrectly and that a "meltdown" hasn't really occurred. He said the term "meltdown" is used to describe when the fuel rods themselves melt, which supposedly hasn't happened yet.

I'm getting sick of all these contradicting facts. -_-

Circumstances keep changing. Originally, they found cesium at the plant, which could have indicated a meltdown. When the first explosion occured, the most likely scenario was that melting fuel came into contact with water. When they realized the explosion was caused by vented hydrogen mixing with oxygen, meltdown became less likely but still hasn't been ruled out I think. You won't get solid facts for a long time, don't worry too much about it.

e: plus Japanese officials are being ridiculously tight-lipped and several high-profile people are speculating a cover-up.
