Re: Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan
The next big Cascadia earthquake to hit BC, WA, OR, and northern CA is supposedly within the next 200 years or so, but no one can know for sure. The last big Cascadia earthquake to hit the west coast of N America that's directly related to plate movement (subduction) was in 1700. The magnitude was 9.0. There will be another big one soon, but we don't know exactly when.
ps Hawaii doesn't really have earthquakes. It lies on a hot spot, not on the edge of a plate.Comment

Re: Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan
So it was 9.0 then 8.9, and now 9.0 again? :/
Anyway, I was completely shocked when I heard about this. One of my friends in the Philippines told me about it right before she had to evacuate and everyone was talking about it on Twitter. I was literally glued to NHK for like 5 hours before watching on CNN for the next 2-3 hours. ><
I think more people have been helping Japan rather than saying dumb shit like that Pearl Harbor crap. It's comforting to know that not everyone in the States is an ignorant dumbass.
Most of the K-Pop forums I'm at have already started collecting donations to send to Red Cross Japan. I think the most impressive is SNSD's forum, they have already surpassed the $1,000 donation mark. One member who works for Google is going to match the donation amount exactly and another will match it up to $2500.
It's really great to see so many online communities showing concern for Japan. Yes, the death toll is high, but the number of people misplaced because of their homes being destroyed is pretty high too. Please donate if you haven't already!
And if you know anyone that has lost contact with a relative/friend in Japan or found out that a relative/friend has passed away because of this disaster, just give them a hug and let them know you're there...Comment

That link is from the last time it erupted. That video was uploaded early February. The volcano went dormant for a little while then erupted again today [well, tomorrow for us]. Erupted at 5:40 in the morning, horrible wake-up call D:
