Police: Deaths in Japan's Miyagi may pass 10,000
TOKYO – Police in Japan's northeastern Miyagi prefecture say they estimate that the death toll in Miyagi alone will likely exceed 10,000. Miyagi is one of the areas worst affected by a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that hit Friday.
Miyagi police spokesman Go Sugawara said Sunday that the prefecture's police chief told a gathering of disaster relief officials that his estimate for deaths in the prefecture was more than 10,000.
There were only 379 officially confirmed deaths in Miyagi out of a total of 801 as of Sunday afternoon.

Re: Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan
Radiation wouldn't spread that far even if 1000 nuclear plants melted down.
I would expect people in the U.S, Canada, and Mexico to receive an increase of around 0.0006 mSv annual exposure.
4.5 Sv is a lethal dose (if untreated), and 1 Sv is enough to cause radiation sickness.Comment

Will japan be left alone? Now there's a volcano up their ass.
Volcano in southern Japan resumes eruptions
The Associated Press
Sunday, March 13, 2011; 11:15 AM
TOKYO -- The weather agency says a volcano in southern Japan is spewing ash and rock again as the country struggles with the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in the north.
The Meteorological Agency issued a warning Sunday saying that Shinmoedake volcano resumed activity after a couple of quiet weeks.
The mountain is on Kyushu island, 950 miles (1,500 kilometers) from the epicenter of Friday's magnitude 8.9 earthquake and resulting tsunami, which devastated much of the country's northeastern coast.
It was unclear if the eruptions were linked to quake. Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire" - an arc of seismically active zones where earthquake and volcanic eruptions are common.

Re: Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan
In addition to the nuclear power plant issue, electricity shortage is the biggest issue in Tokyo now (and this will last for months at least).
Resultingly all infrastructures will stop (if not all-time) in such a big city, which will cause various fatal issues most likely.Comment
