For those that are getting discouraged because of alex/debit/omg ma, don't think about it in terms of getting beaten. Think of it as finding out where you are on the stepmania ladder. Active competition, if you aren't worrying about losing, is about getting better. I'm pretty good with the fact that my MA is worse than Rosie O'Donnell's voice, but my speed is pretty cool. Kommisar is backwards, his MA is ****in beastly but his speed (at least iirc) sucks. I'm sure I've posted a score that made chris think, "hmm I wonder if I can do that well on that file." I know he's posted scores that made me go "hmm I wonder if I can do that on judge 1."

tl;dr - Don't worry about losing, because actively competing will only make you better.

Exactly this. Also, with this many competitors, you will undoubtedly have implied rivalries that will speed up the results of active competition.

You can lower the background brightness in the settings to 0%, rather than flat out removing the image.

You can turn off backgrounds in the options. Under the appearance or I think there's a background option there to turn them to 0% transparent if you mean that they mess with your eyes.

I don't know if I should really keep trying, if I'm competing against people who can AAA/SDP, when the best I can get is A.
