Re: How do you pronounce epitome?
First, I'd like to point out that knowingly pronouncing words incorrectly is just being ignorant. Most words have defined pronunciations; they should be pronounced as such.
Second, it is most definitely not extremely disrespectful to correct someone's pronunciation. Rather, it is disrespectful to not correct the pronunciation. Pronouncing a word incorrectly means that either a slip of tongue occurred or that the user does not know how to pronounce the word. If one is in the conversation and notices the pronunciation mistake, one should correct the mistake so as to help out the person who made it avoid making future mistakes. If spelling should be corrected, why should pronunciation not?
Furthermore, you assert that when one corrects another's word pronunciation, that this person is trying to look "intelligent." The truth of this statement cannot be proven nor adequately supported, and as such the poor argument will be disregarded. A similar argument would be stating that bears prefer to watch ESPN over MTV.
Finally, the person being corrected should and, in my experience, usually does appreciate the correction. A similar example is pointing out when someone has food stuck in their teeth. Though the person with the food in his teeth may feel embarrassed, after fixing the problem, he will feel better knowing that he will no longer have the food in his teeth. The same principle applies with word pronunciation. Though the speaker may feel a bit of embarrassment for pronouncing the word wrong, he will feel better knowing he will not make the mistake again (so long as he chooses to correct his mistake).
tl;dr
Ignorance is not bliss. Help a brother out. How the hell do we know what bears like to watch on TV? It sucks to get food stuck in your teeth.Comment

Re: How do you pronounce epitome?
different languages call for different phonetics.
it's like i'd get pissed over people saying genre and rendez-vous with your silly english pronounciation, when I know the proper phonetics of these french words.
It may be insulting to some, but everyone does it in some way.Last edited by kommisar; 01-8-2011, 04:02 AM.

Re: How do you pronounce epitome?
Dosslol is basically putting forth the old "We shouldn't hurt people's feelings and let them continue making mistakes because in the end, a word's just a word" logic. Language is an inherently irregular thing, and there's nothing wrong with upholding a particular standard of actually speaking it correctly.
What I find worse than someone correcting another's grammar/spelling is some poor bloke trying to use tougher words incorrectly.Comment
