It sort of is.
For something that is considered a useful consumer good, then making it cheaper/easier to get means more people buy it. i.e. plasma tvs, good food, iphones.
But for something like drugs, part of the appeal is the very fact that it's illegal, and that other people around you are using it illegally. Obviously this isn't the only mechanism, and some people will use drugs solely because it's legal now, but you can't say what the net effect is without studies to back you up.

It's really not. There is a segment of those who want to use pot simply *because* it's illegal, but this is by far not the majority opinion, and statements like yours almost sound trollesque. If you're seriously just misinformed/ignorant of basic economics or drug trends/history, just do some simple Google searches. In the short term, consumption would undoubtedly rise.

The long-term trends are more debatable, and again, a lot of that depends on how the legalization would be handled.

Well, maybe every drug shouldn't be legalized right away. Maybe only soft drugs like weed, and use that as an experiment to see what happens. I seriously don't think weed should be illegal though, if anything, there should be at most a limit on possession amount. Hard drugs are obviously debatable.. probably not worth the risk.

Personally I am all for the legalization of weed. But it's downright lunacy to legalize harder stuff -- the downsides are just far too great and they don't offset the probability of responsible use by a trivial margin.

EnR, I think your letting your bias get in the way of logic.

I'm not disagreeing with you, and you have a very good reason to think what you do, but its something I've noticed.

Superfreak04, me and you are the same. I've gotten high before, quite enjoy it, in fact. But if it ever started to effect my grades or my attitude towards my parents and friends, I would stop, right there, and make sure the problem got fixed. Izzy says the perfect thing in, "If less things are crimes, there is less crime" so crime WOULD drop, but it wouldn't change what happens. People get shot for drugs, people will still get shot for drugs weather their legal or not, their just more accessible. I'm not going to say that drugs should be legal or illegal, but legal will have pro's and con's, and illegal, also, will have pro's and con's. There is no way of getting around it.

I wouldn't ever let my kids smoke cigarettes or do drugs. I have friends who smoke weed all the time and it's amazing how ****ing dumb they've become. I can't even have a god damn decent conversation with them. People who do drugs are annoying as ****. Besides where would all these tv shows and movies go if drugs were legal?

No, I've smoked K2 which is synthetic weed and it's legal.

Let me just say that K2 is a very different substance than weed. It's not nearly as healthy (or in my opinion, pleasurable) as weed. People have actually overdosed and been sent to the hospital on weed, plus it's really bad for your lungs.

They don't tax weed because they know that weed is already available as is. People can sell weed without tax which means businesses who sell weed from a tobacco store won't get much business if a person can get the same amount of weed from someone else, makes sense?

You have to realize that street weed prices are very inflated, and very much based on your local area. Something that costs you $25 in DC might only cost you $15 in Southern California. Regardless of what you're paying, dealers are making a lot more money than the amount the weed is actually worth. Once weed is legalized, the prices will likely decrease significantly, and the illegal weed business will die out because it won't be nearly as lucrative.


Anyways, here's my two cents:
All drugs should be legalized, regulated, and taxed by government. Harder drugs should be relatively expensive, and people who are found doing something violent or dangerous while intoxicated should be sent to rehab and possibly jail. Rehab centers should be socialized and drug addicts should be able to check into rehab centers, regardless of how much they can pay. All of this should help to eliminate drug cartels, the violence surrounding the illegal drug trade, overcrowded prisons, and hopefully help out poorer areas that struggle with drug addiction.

Why the hell is gas taxed to the ****, I read on the gas pump that it's like 15% goes to federal and 10% goes to provincial or some ****. then there's some other 5% tax, so really gas only costs what... 80 cents a litre? BTW I'm Canadian.
