Re: who the hell is this guy????

Hello, this is AJ's apprentice. He's absolutely right about what you need to do. Go play on easier Expert songs, since its much easier to focus on your own body and making it do what you want it to (using heels AND toes, not just toes). You'll quickly see that it becomes very boring and hardly any effort. When this level is reached, go play harder ones, trying above ALL else, including getting good scores or even passing the song, to keep this mindset and preserving your form. At first, you'll probably get a lot of misses/pad CBs and such, but try not to go back to using just your toes. Eventually, you'll get the hang of it and start being able to focus more on timing and energy preservation, which will in turn raise your scores too. Once you keep getting very good scores on the same songs, you'll want to go higher. Lather, rinse, repeat.

To truly improve, you have to find your threshold of pass difficulty. Say that you can go for about 8-10 measures of stream @ 140bpm. Well, go ahead and try Loituma out; it has 2 separate 16 measure streams with not much rest in between them. Will you fail out your 1st try? Absolutely. Will you fail out for 2 weeks straight? More than likely, yes. Hell it took me almost a month and 30ish plays to finally pass Infernoplex. But finding this threshold, and playing stuff thats beyond it, will wear you out MUCH faster, usually to the point of failing the song... but that's what you want! As your legs are giving out, you will notice that you move less and less the closer you get to breaking. By sitting at this breaking level, you're getting your legs trained to use less energy, and move much less distances. Yes, I can pass 13s, but I cant lift a crapton more weight with my legs than I could when I was stuck on 10s, or run a mile faster than ever before or run for longer distances. Granted, I have a lot more endurance and stamina now, but if I tried using just my toes on stuff like I can pass now I would blow out very quickly... technique REALLY is all that important!

It will take some time too. Even with the fact that I get all my tokens for free and I went to the arcade 3-4 times a week, it took me about 3 months to go up a degree of difficulty (say, from 10s to 11s) and over a year to get where I am now (passing a great deal of 13s and on my way to 14s). Hope this advice will help you on your way to getting better at ITG/DDR!

PS: To be fair, I can only pass the 2 easiest Dragonforce songs out of the 25 officially stepped files... not that I'm complaining about them ;D

        Kewl, thanks for the advice
I can play 11's now, but with my technique, it isn't easy.
I can pass Sepia on pad for example, and don't really have a problem doing longer songs.

I tend to have a physical barrier though stopping me from doing drills. Its not because I get tired. I can't do them full stop. My muscles lock up after the first couple.

An example would be Max 300 at the very end, where your meant to tap 3 times on your left then right foot. To get those, I have to use both my feet on the same arrow, as any more than 2 of those hits, and my muscles lock, not enabling me to do any more hits on that same foot at that speed. When alternating feet, I find it a bit easier.

I will attempt to flat foot though more I have a Cobalt Flux that would make doing that rather easy, but then in our local arcade, we only have a DDR:X which is crap at FC's, and light button presses

Yeah, I'm fortunate to have an ITG2 at the arcade I work at, even if it is just a crap upgraded cabinet. Right arrows drop holds 50% of the time, but whatevs.

Also, Max 300's ending is lame so dont worry... the equivalent of hitting 225BPM 8th notes. I can't do them for **** either. It's only one song, and there are tons others you can play to get your stamina and such up. Super-Max-Me Mix is a good one to play when at the arcade, but since you have a CF at home you should consider downloading these Mungyodance simfiles.Over 800 pad files between the 3 mixes, so I'd recommend getting all 3 if you have the time. Overall, you'll find a LOT of decent files, especially in the 10-11 range. And there's a good amount of 12s and 13s to practice on.

Check out Groovestats.com too, filtering out "ranked songs" so you go straight to the ones already proven to be the most fun. There's all sorts of stamina songs with tons of stream in them for 11s, 12s, and 13s.

I got those simfiles They're fun actually!
            A lot of good songs

I haven't got the Cobalt with the arcade mod, so its probably a lot easier to learn flat footing on it.

I played Super Max Me Mix in the arcade today, and actually found the Challenge chart easier than the Expert chart...?

At the end on the Expert chart, there are those alternating left foot/right foot/left foot/right foot that I have problems getting to speed, but on the Challenge chart, its mostly streaming which I find easier to perform, and managed a higher score.

I'll check out that, thanks a lot Dark Chrysalis
I'll probably play on my Cobalt come tomorrow for a few hours or so

The Challenge chart for Max Me Mix is a bit easier to pass, but the song is a bit more technical on the scoring aspect (mini-jacks after quick crossovers, lots of jumps and some candle-stepping).

Re: who the hell is this guy????

I found the end bit a lot easier! The quick jumping was rather hard, but that's the first time I've attempted Challenge on pad so wasn't sure what to expect.
It didn't have the jacks alternating from left to right foot in quick succession like the Expert chart does so much

I'm going to set up a thread on scores I've got from the MungyDance stuff, to see how I improve I'll link to it shortly

Sweet. Hey, if you find a good techno/DNB song that you wouldn't mind seeing an ITG chart for, I can help you out by making it a specific difficulty or having it test a specific technique.

Just wondering, do you use the sides of your foot when flat footing? *just using heel/toes now*

If you have really sensitive pads and you have really fine-tuned your footing, you may very well be facing towards the machine at all times rather than facing diagonally to it when turning (see this video). That's WAY down the line though.

JJ is getting out of control, he is not even on the chart anymore.

seeing him play in rl tho, is memorizing. Looking at him play makes the songs seem easy, until you try it. I had to find out the hard way.
