Re: 11-year old graduates college
oops subjectively biased statement...beep boop commence with fixing
Tell me...what exactly substantiates a necessity for certain knowledge as it relates to time (or in this specific context, age)?
nice try dosslarx
I would agree (to an extent) with the adage "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," but I don't think we can quite safely assume that the kid's eschewal of video games indicates that he has completely forbade himself from having fun. Instead, the article and video suggest that he finds enjoyment in other activities (e.g. martial arts, scuba diving, etc.) that are merely more productive than video games. Furthermore, to say that he has consequently missed out on leisure and social interaction would be to risk implying that video games are the only suitable channel for such experiences. Thus, though there isn't anything inherently wrong with playing video games (and in fact there are quite a few indirect benefits of doing so), he feels that his time could be better spent on more worthwhile pursuits, and in a way, his talent has placed somewhat of an obligation on him (whether or not he is aware of it) to adopt such a mindset. Cut the kid some slack...Comment

Re: 11-year old graduates college
he's a ****ing martial arts champion he has a life
They say he started college when he was 8 years old. This makes me think that he took all of the required standardized tests and stuff to get through all the years of school and skipped all the social aspects of the schooling. Normally, I would say that's negative, but since he does have a life outside of his schoolwork I can't criticize him. I have a friend who teaches kids martial arts and many of her lifelong friends came out of those experiences so I assume he's getting the social networking any of us would get from school, which is really just a glorified day care for working families.*
*I'm not saying that the educational aspects of school are unimportant, I'm just saying that the stay here for seven hours a day part has nothing to do with actually learning material. It's more about learning how to interact and learning how to learn, which are very important skills but really don't have anything to do with educating the kids.Comment

Re: 11-year old graduates college
o fuc, he's asian AND jewish you guys
But seriously, while I am very impressed at his ability to get through his education that quickly, I don't think it's very useful. I mean, first, while it's definitely wrong to say this guy has no life, I can't see him establishing much rapport with people of his own age for perhaps another decade or so. There are a lot of things he'd be missing out on that he might very well regret later. Also, because he's so young, I think it might be difficult to start a career at that age, because of child labor laws and age discrimination. Second, while he may be a college grad, it WAS a community college, so if he wants to have a good career he will undoubtedly have to go through at least graduate school (that is, he's not done with education just yet). Third, isn't the focus of education supposed to be to teach you stuff and help you grow as a person? He might have enough credits to graduate from college, but he still has a lot of personal, mental, and emotional growth left to go through, and I think it's going to be a tough road without a support system (i.e. school and many friends) to help him through it.
Same. I for one was definitely smart enough to get into *a* college well before I actually graduated high school. If there wasn't so much work to do in school I probably could have gone quite a bit faster than I did... but I'm happy I didn't, because I think I have a much better social life than I would have if I'd skipped several grades.I've been wondering that to. My guess is lots of expensive private school who feeds you credit hours in short periods of time. Doesn't really seem fair. If i could have skipped all that busy work at those public highschools and focuses on actually learning I bet I would have done really good to.Best AAA: Policy In The Sky [Oni] (81)

Re: 11-year old graduates college
A few asians are extremely smart.
Some of the other asians are dumb as hell.
Most of the remaining asians go into the range from being mediocre to being just ok.
In fact, you can replace the word 'asians' with 'people.'Comment

"I feel it's a waste of time playing video games because it's not helping humanity in any way," says Moshe, who wants to use his knowledge to change the world.
ohhh what a dick. and i disagree, i think playing video games does help humanity. You change lives of the people you kill in FPS. you learn to channel your anger into the people you shoot. if you have enough determination, you play enough to be one of the best at that particular game and people all over the gaming community admire you.
Your just changing a different aspect of the world.
