I don't remember the last time I ever sat at my computer staring at someones stepmania chart and admiring it for its aesthetic qualities, or feeling the emotions of self expression that the stepper was trying to convey to me in his simfile.

If im not mistaken that is what art is, something that serves no purpose its just there being a form of self expression and to just purely exist for its self.

If it has a function it isnt art because it serves a purpose of some sort.

Simfiles serve the purpose to follow the musics rhythm and be played for enjoyment.

If Simfiles were art, QeD's self expression in his art would be that of a two year old.

QeD writes Paragraph upon paragraph trying to defend him self and attempt to look smart when in reality it just makes him look stupid and dense. I dont really care about his files I just find it halarious that he would stoop as low as to calling it art.

If people dont like your simfiles its too bad the file isnt fun.
But hey now that I think about it your files can be art since pretty much no one will play your files and then they will server no purpose, you can take a screenshot of the chart and post it up and we can all admire the arrows you took so much effort to place so we can stare and try and figure out the f**ked up emotions you were trying to convey to us in your arrow art.

So basicly, you did never try, to actually listen to the music and compare it to the stepfile? or is it just a long time ago you did it last? (yes thats actually a question, not a statement)
Stepfiles could be considered a way of expressing ones understandment of the music...
Music is considered an art and id call a stepfile a way to percieve the music (and yes expressing that understanding in a simple arrow scheme)

It really depends on view point, as i said above its about how you "listen" to the music and then again how you convey it to others, OFC its going to be different from creator to creator (creators should respect other creators, just by the simple fact that they express some kind of understanding, in the same style as themselves).

I think Kommissar said it rather well earlyer in the thread

making simfile charts is like composing music that already exists

Its quite rare for 2 people to understand the same piece of music in the same way.

Art is depended all on the person. Just becasue you don't like it doesn't mean others are all the way with you. If everyone liked the exact same thing, this would be a very dull world.

And yes, it's just flagrantly wrong to claim that art can have no purpose. Please don't try to trivialize the works of every single great painter, writer, architect, chef etc. who have contributed to our society. Hell, I even consider mathematics an art (and I'm sure anybody who is interested in math would agree with me), and who can honestly say that math has no use? So please, it's bad enough that this thread which was getting back on track into a good discussion of Stepmania has now been effectively derailed once again into a cesspool of unprovoked slander and egotistical stagecraft - it's really just doubly angering to hear someone question the legitimacy of every decent piece of culture that has been produced in the history of human civilization past the function of looking at "ooooh pretty colors."

*sigh* And we totally had a good thing going for a couple posts there...

I write files, and honestly those files at least bring enjoyment to some people. I find my writing style more artistic than technical, and honestly some people agree. Of course I'm still learning how to improve my files, but I will do that in my own way and at my own pace. If you have something productive to contribute, and many people in this thread did, then by all means do not hesitate to speak, and I will listen with all ears - and if I agree with you, then I'll be much better off for it, and will be greatly thankful. But if you just want to spew out insults for the purpose of putting me down, then frankly I don't see the point. Does it make you feel better? Do you go away from the keyboard going "oh gee, I just flamed some guy on an internet forum. LOLOLOL." And then go pump your arms in front of a mirror? Does it somehow make your files better or my files better to just go on and on about how I'm somehow not as great as you? Is your goal to demean me so much that I give up and stop writing? Would we really be better off then? I mean, seriously, I just cannot see the end goal is here. It's obviously not to help me, since in the posts I'm referring to advice is scarce; all I see as a possible motive is a desire to fan the ego of a mean-spirited human being.

But ultimately, this is a thread that I created in order to make my files accessible to anybody who may extract a bit of pleasure from them. No matter how you look at it, this is a sincere cause; I am not doing it to impede the progress of anybody else, and I am not doing it with any malicious intent: I am doing it because I like Stepmania and I want to contribute to a game that has sucked so many hours out of my life in the past years. It is flabbergasting to see such unprovoked attacks aimed at both the integrity of my files and my person with no incentive other than to derive joy from putting others down. It's flabbergasting and really revealing of how common rules of human decency and respect go flying out the window when those with suspect motives find a public forum where their identity (and with that identity, their responsibility of being moral people) is hidden behind the barrier of anonymity that is the computer screen.

I'm sorry if I sound flustered and a bit nonplussed (and I am) - it shouldn't surprise me that these things happen on the internet - but to have them happen *twice* on the same thread (MY thread), when the thread had taken such a pleasant turn into a productive conversation is just frustrating in the extreme.

I will continue to write stepfiles - I love Stepmania, I love the music, and I love the feeling of creating something and molding it to my tastes. And if you really feel so offended by my desire to do that, then I'm truly at a loss for advice. But please, do not spread all of your hatred on this thread - that is in direct contradiction to what this forum is meant for, and indeed, an affront to the sense of community and creative freedom that characterizes Stepmania as a whole.

i'm being mean but honest. unless you make a simfile that kil likes nobody will ever play your files. This is what's called kil theory.
