    If you level up through the means of gaining EXP, it's an RPG. It can be a turn-based RPG, action RPG, tactical RPG, etc. Not too hard to understand. See, I wouldn't call Dynasty Warriors 4 an RPG even though you have stats. There's not enough of a leveling system.

    EDIT: Wow, I can't believe OrganisM has never heard of an action RPG. I think he has been living under a rock. The genre dates back to the mid 80s.
