It all depends on how the humiliation is carried out, I would imagine.

But I agree with Rubix. Such a punishment, if done too well, can cause more harm than good.

Graffiti is a perfectly legitimate form of artistic expression, it's a style of art rather than a separate act.

Graffiti artists in my town have been hired by businesses to paint murals on side facings of their building etc, and they take a lot of skill and look fantastic.

Vandalism is vandalism, and the form it takes is irrelevant, but just because a lot of vandalism is graffiti doesn't make all graffiti vandalism.

I've seen some fantastic graffiti online and it's a shame that there aren't any amazing murals or what have you in my area.


If the kid willingly went out and spray painted something vulgar, is that not vandalism?
Personally, I'd love to have something really artistic pop up on the side of my building.
However if people are doing it for the sake of being asses and trying to ruin something on purpose, I don't agree with that.

This is what I refer to, really. Some forms of humiliation are just so permanent and devastating. Some people don't want to be wearing a scarlet letter for the rest of their lives. Humiliation is effective, sure, but it's like saying murder is an effective way to stop people from stealing vegetables from your garden or something. Just because it solves the problem doesn't make it an appropriate method of action.

I think he should have made the kid apologize to the whole school or something. Humiliation is short-term good, long-term bad.

As for the graffiti....what DID he graffiti? Depends on the place and the picture, I guess.
