I think the word "sport" also implies something that is not necessary to life, but rather a leisure activity.

For some reason I just can't call war a sport. It brings the genius of Norv Turner up to the level of Eisenhower and the sacrafice of Jim Brown for Cleveland up to that of the men of D-Day for their country. That just feels wrong. I think looking at war as a sport is problematic for a nation that is facing a war that will last the next 25-50 years.

    Just my musings...

Thus, Cheerleading, figure skating, etc. are disqualified by rule B.
War is disqualified by rule A.

Wow just want to say that you guys scare the sh*t out of me. If there were no rules governing war, there would be just really bad things to happen to everyone who steps foot on the battle field. I guess we could use nukes because there is no rules to say we cant. Gas (bio and chemical) would be thrown around with no care in the world. Do you know that the Geneva Convention bans the use of the 50 cal on people and do you know why it is banned? Because the 50 call round just has to come close to you (like a foot by you) and you lose an arm or a hand or something else. If it hit you, you are done. You are not surviving that. I have shot the 50 cal on a couple of trainning ops and there is some power behind that weapon. A hundred round belt weighs a lot, atleast 30 lbs.

ok i kinda went to the left of the topic but you guys think war is a sport and that p*ssed me off because i am going to Iraq and I will be in constant danger from mortars, rockets, and bullet rounds. Along with homemade explosives and if you think that war is a sport that I can just sit on the bench for a while and then in the end everyone goes home after they shake hands, you are fuc*ing idiots. A couple of the Marines i work with came back from Iraq with Purple Hearts. Do you think they thought war is just a sport? No, they could of died. I guess to you that would be sitting on the bench forever.

Chess is the sport form of war. War itself is not a sport, nor even close.

War is not a sport. I go and defend your rights. Do you like your rights? If you do maybe you should thank me for giving up some of my rights to protect yours. War should not be compared to chess. I guess in your game i am a pawn and the king sends me out to die. Wow that is the most retarded thing to say. Yes, going to some 3rd world h*ll hole is a thing i do, but i only do it because i love to be free. I give back to my country because they give me rights to live.

I dont really know where i am going with this because i am a little drunk.
            war is not a sport
            war is not chess
            war is not fun
            a sport is fun
a sport you are not going to die if you lose
war you are going to die if you lose
stop saying war is a sport cause it makes you sound like an idiot

Thank you for finally recognizing, in your last post, the idea of a difference in defintion.

I have GREAT respect for ALL of our armed forces and everything they do, so please don't think that just because my definition of a sport may or may not include war by a stretch that I relegate it to the level of football.

This is a thread on definition, and requires a bit of abstract thought.

I think, to be a sport, something must be either judged in some way, or compared to someone/something else. This includes almost anything that is generally considered a sport.

Having a war with a "3rd world hell hole" as you would call it has nothing to do with your freedom. The whole Iraq war was based on a bad assumption made by George Bush, you being free has nothing to do with this war. You'd have your freedom without fighting in this war, the Americans are still in this war because Bush doesn't want to admit his blunder.

well he's in too far to run away now. They can't just leave now. It's like holding on to a three point lead for the whole game and just giving up (not that was and sports are the same thing).

What lead are you talking about? There is no lead, the government, the media, it is all playing with our heads to make it seem like they have a lead. George just appears to have the lead for capturing Saddam, but really, look at the tactics used by the opposing fighters, they use hostages and really not just affect the troops, but the whole population of the country on the whole. Some may argue this is reason to continue fighting, but think, did we see those kinds of images on the media as often as we do now before there was the war?
