So, in case anyone is interested, here's the problem.

How bright would a laser have to be in order to advertise on the moon

a) during a full moon?

b) during a new moon?

Diameter of the Moon: 3.5e6 m

The distance from the Earth to the Moon: 3.8e8 m

Brightness of the Moon, during a full moon: 0.25 lux

Brightness of the Moon, during a new moon: 0.001 lux


You can assume both that the laser light is green (555 nm) and that the moon is actually a disk.

I may have given you more information than you need.

I won't be sharing the answer at any point in time after to this post.

See, the problem, the theme of this wasn't that how it could happen, but what you think about the mere idea of advertising on the moon and its implications. Despite the playfulness of the presentation of the situation, I am bringing up an important issue of where media should draw its line. Some of you caught on to that, others well...

The thing is, a billboard can be taken down. The moon... well, different story. Using a laser on the moon to advertise is blatantly idiotic because, when the ad is defunct, you will probably need to erase it somehow, messing up the moon bit by bit. In any case, companies and advertising agencies shouldn't fiddle with nature like that to get their point across. I really do enjoy a good full moon, and such advertising would ruin nice events like eclipses and such.

Like I said in Calcium Deposit's PM about the issue. It isn't even a hypothetical situation because it simply isn't possible, and even if it were, it would never be allowed.

Someone would have to actually own the moon in order to put an advertisement on it, and treaties signed between pretty much every major power with a space program have decreed that nobody can own space.

Hey guys. They aren't taking over the moon for themselves. They aren't permanently engraving anything on the moon. They're shining a laser at it. This isn't illegal, nor should it be. Like some people have said, the moon belongs to all, so who's to say they don't have the right to shine a laser at it? Think of a painting in a museum. Anyone in the museum can look at it. It's not vandalism if you shine a laser at a painting. The same goes for the moon.

China didn't sign that agreement. It's also not impossible for them to get lasers to focus on the moon. So, this isn't unfeasible.

Hypothetical situations are not always possible. That is why they are hypothetical, I guess.
So answer me this: If people are not allowed to put messages on the moon, then why are they allowed to try? If it happens to succeed, then according to you every nation will throw a fit. So wouldn't it be in our nation's (U.S.) best interest to stop them?

Of course it most likely won't succeed, not on the first try, but anything is possible in a hypothetical situation.

Oh and any other private messages you would like to make public? I am sure you have some juicy ones you e-stud you.
