I'm sorry bro, I can't agree with you on this one. The only person I'm honestly interested in appealing to is myself. I am always overjoyed when someone else likes my music. But that's not why I do it. The reason i post on here is to get advice as far as production goes, not to change my style or conform to a specific genre. All the advice I get here I take with a grain of salt, because you've got to understand that different people have different tastes in music.

For myself i prefer the more down trodden melodies. whereas someone like KGZ has more upbeat music.

I don't particularly like KGZ's music.. but I can absolutely recognize that he is an amazing producer.

But my god, I could never give him any tips on "his" genre.. because that's what it is... " his"

Just as KGZ couldn't tell me how to make IDM or Breaks.

You need to define your own style and then if you so choose, label it under the genre that it best fits.

That's very true. I'm just exploring different styles to see if some come more naturally to compose than others.

I still don't know what this is!

But at that point, without any boundaries, you can make a track saying it's a DnB Track, or a Trance Track and tell people that it's a classical piece or a Rap song. Clearly people will know the difference, but the fact is, like you said, you can make a red squiggle on a piece of paper and call it a dragon... why not make a rap song and call it trance?

That's exactly how I feel at this point.

THANK YOU! I'm just looking for tips on how to make it better. Not to make it someone else's, change it completely.

I'm hoping so too! Especially after that remix, I'm learning a bunch of new techniques. I've realized, that for FLS7, the main thing is "Automation Clips".

absolutely. With that style it's ALL about the automation.

                Re: DnB Test

One quick question: Where did I say that I was making y'all try to change genres or try to regulate genres? I find that overall music sounds a hell of a lot better with the three fundamental sections in any piece of music.

Also, what do you plan to do with your productions? If this is answered, I might be able to elaborate more.

An example of a false bassline (since I can't upload it) can be found at silex-studios.com, under a .flp file called "3xOsc Tutorial." It hits a low note on ever down-beat before going to the higher notes. It (although unintentionally) creates the illusion of a bassline.

sorry it took me so long to reply. i would say its in between the too. leaning a bit more towards breakbeat yes.

edit: and after a couple listens i can tell that its more like a breakbeat trying to be dnb. DnB is pretty tricky stuff to make. especially without premade drum sequences to chop up.

                    Re: DnB Test

So here is my and Gorlock's take on what we've just listened to (Without reading what previous people have said, so the following may have already been said):

You definately need to expand your sample bank. You have a kick, hat, and two snares?
The drums need to be more of a D'nB pattern. Just because the drums are at the right BPM, doesn't make it D'nB.
Need to do something much more with your synth. Sounds like it's a basic reese synth. Needs more modulation to it. You have the Melody down, but you need a harmony bass-line going in the background.

Most of what I said is a pretty blanket critique. It's really hard to give a solid review of what I think about this 'track' since it is merely a drumloop with a synth over it. Until you really expand this out to something over at least 32 bars in length, it's hard to tell how you have everything in the track working together.

I hope this somewhat helps a bit. Best of luck!
