Re: Rap Music Bad Influence On Kids?

I havent read all the posts but I would say that it depend only of the age and the degree of receptivity of the person. If you let a young child listen to rap everytime and that the lyrics can be really crude and bad, it can make the child do what they are saying in the songs because he will get to think that its a good thing if he always hear it.

Just censoring in some cases is good because sometimes there is a lot of negative stuff in the songs. Major bands like 50 cents are pure crap. Its completely stupid and i just dont know why they let theses bad rappers sing their crap.

Real rappers that have good style and that are speaking of things acceptable are not harmful.

Basically, It just depends on who you listen to.
The Cool Kids only rap about bikes, while Lil' Wayne raps about his whips, money, drugs, and women.
Some rap music is a bad influence,
      some isn't.
There are so many sub-genres within rap music to judge it that abstractly.

Yes, that's why we took the time to be more specific as to exactly what kind of rap we were referring to. That's also why an at least cursory glance over the course of the discussion is important before just responding to the original post.

I don't think anybody takes music seriously enough to be impacted by it that much

Maybe they don't do exactly what's said on the song but see it that way:
A kid starts listenning to rap and keeps a knife in his pocket to be like a real gangster, he says the N word a lot and some black dude gets angry at him and throw is fist in that kids face. The kid takes out the knife and stab him in the belly. Here you go.

Rap music doesn't do anything to influence people to do anything bad. They are just lyrics coming from the song writers' life.

Now when it comes to violent video games influencing on kids, it can not cope by itself. It needs something like school bullying. When you are bullied enough and you are about to snap, the first thing that pops into your head is that video game you recently played. You think to yourself, "Yeah...they have it in the video game, so why can't I do it?" You can do it. You just don't think about what's going to happen when you do it.

well its not about weather the music is bad in my opinion. its about the person who is listening to it's mind set. if they believe the lyrics and preform it its because they cant tell that what song preach is nothing more than a dream. a strong mind can stop almost anything its just in my opinion, that people have become so self aware that they think so much that they get misconceptions. really if everyone used some logic while listening then there wouldnt be a problem with this stuff.

Re: Rap Music Bad Influence On Kids?

I think if a parent blames their child's music for the problems a child is having in their life (getting into drugs, getting in trouble with the law, general tomfoolery) they're just passing the blame from bad parenting to bad people in the music industry trying to influence their precious idealistic children.

parents should be blamed. If you weren't around to teach your kid that video games aren't real, rappers lie and speak with metaphors and similies that dont necessarily reflect things they actually believe or lifestyles they live. some rappers do rap about real ****, like struggles in the ghetto, racism and hate crime in america, etc etc. But those things aren't bad things. thats educating our youth about real things going on that they wouldn't teach you about from that perspective in school or anywhere else.

im not saying there aren't rappers that rap about mindless killing, drug use, whatever. I love brotha lynch hung. i love dr. dre. you just have to be mature about it and dont take those things to heart like advice. you have to realize its just music. its just words its just a beat.

when a kid goes and shoots up his school, dont blame marilyn manson, blame the kid for being a ****ing dumbass and not handling his problems like an adult like his parents should have taught him to.

The question becomes: What account should be made, if any, for the people who don't realise that, and do take it to heart, and as happens with celebrities of all kinds, people emulate them because they idolize them?

You blame parents for "raising bad kids" because they don't teach them that "rappers lie and speak with metaphors" but when you are a celebrity, you have a certain degree of influence over the people who like you, and I'm not sure you can say they are -blameless- when they are aware of the fact that they influence people and are spreading a message that, what they genuinely believe or not, was still their free choice to communicate.

If I personally think drugs are bad, and I make a point of actively glamourizing drugs and the drug lifestyle to kids, and because I'm someone they like and respect, they take up drugs because of the way I describe it, is the fact that I personally think drugs are bad something that should excuse me from responsibility

Re: Rap Music Bad Influence On Kids?

No amount of good parenting can prevent every problem child. Hell, even good parenting allows for a considerable number of bad influences in a child's life.

Even then, not all parents have the capacity to be an ideal parent.

rappers lie and speak with metaphors and similies that dont necessarily reflect things they actually believe or lifestyles they live. some rappers do rap about real ****, like struggles in the ghetto, racism and hate crime in america, etc etc. But those things aren't bad things. thats educating our youth about real things going on that they wouldn't teach you about from that perspective in school or anywhere else.
How many rappers have been shot and/or killed due to the lifestyle they live and sing about? How many of those were subsequently (or still) glorified for living that lifestyle?

Sure, some rap about issues in a good way, but far too much is negatively influential. Even though you can listen to it and not take anything negative to heart, you can't deny that unsavory characteristics are frequently glorified, whether through literary devices or not. Kids are dumb, too; they're more likely to disregard their parents' advice and attach themselves to such bad influences.

I think you ascribe too much blame to the parents, unfairly at times, too.
