They accomplish different things.

If you're just looking for a fun singleplayer experience with a lot of customizability, or if technical proficiency and an almost complete lack of glitches is important to you, SM is probably your thing.

If you don't like downloading stuff, and like lots of stats ranking you in a ton of different ways against everyone, highscore lists for EVERY song, and basically a very competition-oriented game, FFR is probably your thing.

That's not to say competition can't be achieved in SM (SMO) or that FFR can't provide a great purely singleplayer experience, but they ARE basically designed for two totally different things, and so comparing them is rather pointless.

Anyway, I don't really have a preference - on Stepmania you can make and choose your own songs, while on FFR you can't, but on FFR there is good competition and all the files on here are fun, so it can be any
