Doom was before W3D. If there was no Doom, there might not have been a W3D.
    Woah woah woah woah woah.

I think you need to get your resources straightened out.

Wolf3D was the first three-dimensional FPS game ever. As in, before Doom. It, however, did not sell like hot pancakes as much as Doom did, thus it was not a more influential game.

I swear on my left testicle, Wolf3D came before Doom.

Hmm...amazingly, upon doing research, I turned out to be wrong (for once). I did a report on Doom a couple of years ago, I could have sworn Doom was first..

Well, your testicle is safe. Heave your sigh of relief.

Sigh, all you you FPS nuts are wrong, the first FPS, which I dunno if everyone has heard of, is called Catacomb, not Doom, not even Wolfenstein 3D, Catacomb3D. Before those games, you were nuking orcs and other things in Middle Ages times, AND the first FPS with texture mapping. Don't believe me? Then visit here, and click on games. You all lose, Game Over.

My favorite influential game has to be the King's Quest Series. It redifined PC adventure gaming.

PC adventure gaming basically doesn't exist anymore. I guess the series was influential.. but you can't call a series influential if it couldn't hold it's own genre up.

But.. because of the King's Quest series it spawned thousands and thousands of fans. This was at a time though when this was what games were made. There were but, adventure games. I don't think the King's Quest series was anymore than a popular series. Maybe a different adventure game.

FIRST DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN MOST INFLUENTIAL, FOR THE 100TH TIME.

Myst, Riven, there's still a genre.

                  I said basically...

Did you know Lucasarts cancelled both Full Throttle 2 and Sam and Max 2 (pc adventure sequels to pc adventure games) because they don't believe there's a market? That's why Sierra is producing FPS's now and stuff like that. Of course there are still independent companies who are creating a few adventure games a year. But it's not the booming genre it once was.

Other than that.. there are TONS of fan games. I'd have to say that adventure gaming has the most fan sequels than anything else. But those don't bring home the bread.. they're low quality and often very short.. So it could be one of the most influential genres.. but, eh.

You ever heard of Valkyrie Profile? Damn awesome game. Lots of people never knew of it's existence.

Pong. It created the "video game" genre. I win.

But this "Catacomb3D" game created a genre. Usually games like that are really famous, and people call them 'end-all, be-all' games even if they suck. The fact that nobody's heard of it kind of leads me to believe that it really sucks. But whatever...

                                It probably did, but still...

You got to figure it was created in a time when games didn't exactly get around. Something groundbreaking might have come out and no one would have known about it because it just never made it into the media.
