Good luck putting it together and making it work 100% with little to no experience. I wouldn't open up a laptop and change any parts other than RAM for any reason.

My friend bought a bomb ass HP laptop for roughly 1500 and that was about 6 months ago. I own a Dell and my only complaint is the battery life. Other than that, it's awesome and was roughly 1200 3 years ago.

I have an HP, and I love it. No problems at whatsoever. Like Nforcer said, the design for the new HP's are really cool, and they are reliable. My roommate has a Dell, and it seems to work fine too. The only thing I hate about his is that it isn't a widescreen. I can't stand going from my laptop, which is a widescreen, and back to one that isn't.

I went to CompUSA the other week, and they had some really good deals on their HP's. I'm sure there are other good laptops, but I'd go with the new HP's.

HPs are nice, but seriously, consider an Intel dual core processor. My HP laptop's P4HT seems so slow compared to my dad's dual Dell, both have 2GB of RAM.

If it saves any money, get a really small hard drive, you can always add externals, I've got 3 for a total of 740GB of space (every Black Friday, I hop on insane deals).
