    Blargh, Pscho ninja'd me.

Firefox 2.0 has a built-in spell-checker. Works really well, even for me.

I am glad to see my tyranny is causing changes.

Sherb you need Firefox 2.0. It is on by default and is on in most places you type. Right click and click "Spell Check This Field."

I have been using the Google tool bar add on for quite a while. It has built in spell checker. I like it.

ah, i have it now, ooh I'm loving all the red lines under my misspelled words. I had to download the dictionary, maybe its because I'm in England or something, but no matter, I have it now

Re: Some People Don't Get It.

OK, well, no one's prolly gonna read this, but I actually browsed through this entire thread just to see if someone's explicitly mentioned and, and they haven't, although it's sorta come up.

One of the main reason's I strongly believe people hate reading poor grammar and spelling, etc, is because it physically IS harder to read. Anyone else ever hear about the study which tested reading speeds where people used capitals versus no capitals? Well, even for something as simple as capitalizing the beginnings of sentences, reading speed dropped drastically. Same as if all capital letters were used.
I hardly think that its necessary for a study to be done to know how friggin' hard it is to read things which, for instance, don't use any punctuation. Man, the sentences all blur into one, you don't know where to parse ideas from one another, it becomes a nightmare to comprehend.
I suppose that's more about syntax than grammar, but I'm sure the same thing could be said about poor grammar. We've been taught that there're certain ways to speak in school (most of us haven't learned how to read from the internet...yet) and we've already trained ourselves to a certain grammar, and anything which changes from that will probably inevitably involve more processing for us to understand. Either that, or it just sticks out as 'wrong' when someone uses something as hick as 'theirselves'. It's not just about being able to understand something, but also about how much effort is involved in being able to understand something, and if you've even got a single error which stands out, already the person reading its attention has been taken away from the message even if just for an instant.

When I think about it now, I think the MSN and AIM thing for using poor grammar (grammar in the general sense to include spelling errors) probably stems from the fact that you just don't write huge, long paragraphs in it. Communication is limited to a sentence fragment or 2 in a single 'send'. Firstly, sentences and words don't run together into a big jumble with less of them to jumble, and secondly, there's natural pauses in communicating over instant messaging systems, and you have far longer to read a message than necessary, so the little extra effort in parsing something becomes a non-issue. However, when you're trying to read an entire paragraph, you don't take pauses in your reading, and so anything which sticks out to make you stop the flow of the message becomes apparent and annoying.

As an aside, for those people who try to be eloquent with long words, there's been some interesting studies done with intelligence, (using undergrad psychology students only as readers only though,) which have showed that the the longer a word is, the less intelligent undergrads tend to think the writer is.

              PSYCHOLOGY FTW!

I dont believe anyone is actually anoyed by bad grammer. Or else it would be some kind of mental disease.

It does get annoying if it's so bad you can't ever understand what the other person is saying.

Re: Some People Don't Get It.

                      So basically all is covered.

Grammar does not matter as long as it is understandable to all viewers.

Grammar does become a problem when it is not understandable.

That basically ends the thread. Hope you had a good read.

I bet you'll even find descriptivists who disagree with that.

Mainly because in your mind you think of how to abbreviate rather than actually just saying what comes to mind.

Improper capitalization bothers me the most (besides chatspeak.) When others do not capitalize I don't mind as much, but I dislike not doing it myself. Sometimes on IM, when I'm typing very fast and passionately about something, I'll slip up and my IMs will start with uppercase letters, but it usually occurs during informal chats so I'm not as bothered by it.

What I can't stand on these forums is when people are typing and their wordsrun together like this. It's rather annoying and far moredifficult to read.
Thyraxicmole was a prime example of this.
