Nah, I've heard similar accounts from others in Japan. In the tight Bemani communities over near Michigan in the U.S., it's about equal right now. Those who have been playing Bemani for a long time flock to the Guitardora, IIDX and Pop'N while those who are just getting into it spend more time on the DDR and BM (5-key) machines. We have a GF 9th around here and I'm really starting to get into that and if things go okay, there will be a Pop'N in my hometown sometime soon.

I just very recently purchased a Konami IIDX controller along with 5th and 6th style... I can definetly say after playing DDR ever since it first stepped on to the PSX that IIDX has a much *MUCH* steeper learning curve, definetly much more difficult, and requires plenty of eye-HAND coordination skills, as well as finger muscles (My hand literally did hurt and felt sore after many sessions the first time through). I can just barely do any level 6s, some 5s, most 4s, all 3 and below... cant even comprehend level 7 or flashing 7s yet. It's very addicting, and I absolutely love the songs in the series. Techno/trance is definetly a big ++++ in my book.
As for whether which is better... I love both equally.
Konami <3 Bemania <3 DDR <3 Beatmania <3 Pop'n <3 Guitar Freaks <3 Drum Freaks <3 Parapara <3 that-one-game-with-the-sensors-kind-of-like-parapara <3
I love them all, they all have a unique style and flavor, but I definetly gotta give hardest-difficulty award to Beatmania IIDX.Comment

DDR is an excellent work out. Not only does it require stamina.. it requires skill as well. IIDX takes skill too, but what you rather have.. toned legs, or toned arms? ..yeah.. i think DDR owns all. and yes.. all you IIDX fans probably suck ass at DDR because it "was too hard for me to get my ass up and move around"
MWUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! DDR OWNS YOU!Comment

Personally, my favorite has to be DDR.....maybe thats because I've been playing DDR for 3 years and 11 months more than IIDX...hmmmmm. But yeah, I do have to say that IIDX totally outdoes DDR in difficulty....some of those songs on expert I can't even read....I'm just like WTF!!!
