Re: A CT Survey on Gay Tolerance
1. General
- What is...
a) Your first name: Andrew
b) Your country and province/state (if applicable): Canada
c) Your age: 19
d) Your gender: Male
e) Your sexuality: Straight
f) Your religion: None/Atheist
g) Your ethnicity: Caucasian
2. History
a) Did you grow up in a large city, small city, large town, small town, rural area, or other? (If other, please specify) -
Large city, in the suburbs.
b) Did you grow up with a religious family?
Yes
c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small?
Small
d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic?
More homophobic (than I am...) but not extremely homophobic.
e) Is there anyone in your family, or among old friends, who is gay/bi/lesbian/trans?
Not in my family (that I know of)...I have friends that are gay.
f) If yes, have you ever felt threatened by their sexuality? No
g) Have you ever questioned your own sexuality? Yes
3. Present Time
a) Are there any homo/bi/transexuals in your life right now? Yes
b) If yes, how do they relate to you? (Close friends, acquaintances, family, etc?)
Friends/acquaintances
c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react?
I don't know. It depends. Not negatively. I would probably support them and make them feel comfortable since I don't have any problems with it.
d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling?
I think they might act strangely at first but would accept it fairly openly eventually.
e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place?
Definitely at school. It has been like that for awhile, especially in highschool...not so much in university. There is definitely a homophobic atmosphere at work (McDonalds).
4. Opinions/Deeper thinking
a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is?
I would say I don't know. There isn't one specific cause that can be outlined as 'the cause of homosexuality'; there are various factors involved and I could probably write an essay on it pretty easily...which I won't do right now.
b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else?
You can probably influence a persons perspective...definitely, over time so that they end up straight/gay ect. It's probably partially genetic and environmental, making it something that would be hard to cure.
c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples?
It's fine with me. I don't see why it should be a problem, logically. There really is no problem with it other than religious ignorance towards it.
d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?)
A lot of the problem is religion. Of course if you're bringing people up with specific beliefs and such, then you are at the same time bringing them up with aversions to certain things. Survival of the species issue is obviously bull****. That's like supporting war because it's population control. We have an overpopulation problem, not a survival issue.
That and saying it's unnatural is sort of ironic. A lot of things are unnatural. Cars are unnatural and people drive them. What about the computer you're using now? Must be satanic...oops, computers wern't around when people came with these strange beliefs.
I suppose almost inadvertently I've said it also stems from ignorance.
e) Why did you choose take this survey?
I felt like it.
