Re: A CT Survey on Gay Tolerance

    1. General
    - What is...
    a) Your first name: Andrew
    b) Your country and province/state (if applicable): Canada
    c) Your age: 19
    d) Your gender: Male
    e) Your sexuality: Straight
    f) Your religion: None/Atheist
    g) Your ethnicity: Caucasian

    2. History

    a) Did you grow up in a large city, small city, large town, small town, rural area, or other? (If other, please specify) -

    Large city, in the suburbs.

    b) Did you grow up with a religious family?

    Yes

    c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small?

    Small

    d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic?

More homophobic (than I am...) but not extremely homophobic.

    e) Is there anyone in your family, or among old friends, who is gay/bi/lesbian/trans?

Not in my family (that I know of)...I have friends that are gay.

    f) If yes, have you ever felt threatened by their sexuality? No
    g) Have you ever questioned your own sexuality? Yes

    3. Present Time

    a) Are there any homo/bi/transexuals in your life right now? Yes
    b) If yes, how do they relate to you? (Close friends, acquaintances, family, etc?)

    Friends/acquaintances

    c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react?

I don't know. It depends. Not negatively. I would probably support them and make them feel comfortable since I don't have any problems with it.

    d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling?

I think they might act strangely at first but would accept it fairly openly eventually.

    e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place?

Definitely at school. It has been like that for awhile, especially in highschool...not so much in university. There is definitely a homophobic atmosphere at work (McDonalds).

    4. Opinions/Deeper thinking

    a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is?

I would say I don't know. There isn't one specific cause that can be outlined as 'the cause of homosexuality'; there are various factors involved and I could probably write an essay on it pretty easily...which I won't do right now.

    b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else?

You can probably influence a persons perspective...definitely, over time so that they end up straight/gay ect. It's probably partially genetic and environmental, making it something that would be hard to cure.

    c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples?

It's fine with me. I don't see why it should be a problem, logically. There really is no problem with it other than religious ignorance towards it.

    d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?)

A lot of the problem is religion. Of course if you're bringing people up with specific beliefs and such, then you are at the same time bringing them up with aversions to certain things. Survival of the species issue is obviously bull****. That's like supporting war because it's population control. We have an overpopulation problem, not a survival issue.

That and saying it's unnatural is sort of ironic. A lot of things are unnatural. Cars are unnatural and people drive them. What about the computer you're using now? Must be satanic...oops, computers wern't around when people came with these strange beliefs.

I suppose almost inadvertently I've said it also stems from ignorance.

    e) Why did you choose take this survey?

    I felt like it.

      - What is...
      a) Your first name: Joe
      b) Your country and province/state (if applicable): New Jersey
      c) Your age: 19
      d) Your gender: Male
      e) Your sexuality: Straight
      f) Your religion: N/A (brought up Roman Catholic)
      g) Your ethnicity: White

      2. History

      a) Did you grow up in a large city, small city, large town, small town, rural area, or other? (If other, please specify) Small Town
      b) Did you grow up with a religious family? Not that religious
      c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small? Medium-large (6 people total)
      d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic? Tolerant
      e) Is there anyone in your family, or among old friends, who is gay/bi/lesbian/trans? Older sister
      f) If yes, have you ever felt threatened by their sexuality? Nope
      g) Have you ever questioned your own sexuality? Not realistically

      3. Present Time

      a) Are there any homo/bi/transexuals in your life right now? Yes
      b) If yes, how do they relate to you? (Close friends, acquaintances, family, etc?) Older sister
      c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react? Fine, though that person would be unlikely
      d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling? They seemed to handle it fine
      e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place? I don't believe so

      4. Opinions/Deeper thinking

      a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is? Either a "defect" (though I don't like the connotation of that word), or some sort of recessive gene that could have been prevalent millions of years ago, but has died down to this point of uncommonness
      b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else? Not naturally
      c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples? I'm for it
      d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?) The concept is the antithesis of what most everyone initially learns about relationships, along with the survival of mankind, thus making it seem horribly out of place and "wrong"
      e) Why did you choose take this survey? Because it applies to me

I tried my best to design this survey without bias. My idea was simply to get an idea of what the world thinks about homosexuality today, and I will be going to other places with it. You are welcome to your own opinion and I for one don't think of you as a 'stubborn ignorant person'. Thank you for sharing your ideas, it's always good to see all sides to a story

As for me... I guess I may as well answer it anyway, just to share my own thoughts with you all :3

        1. General

        - What is...
        a) Your first name: Amanda...
        b) Your country and province/state (if applicable): Ontario, Canada
        c) Your age: 16
        d) Your gender: Female
        e) Your sexuality: Lesbian
        f) Your religion: Not totally sure. I have too many ideas to follow one specific religion.
        g) Your ethnicity: Caucasian

        2. History

        a) Did you grow up in a large city, small city, large town, small town, rural area, or other? (If other, please specify) I grew up in a small town, and have lived in a small city for the past 3 years.
        b) Did you grow up with a religious family? Not really. We celebrate Christmas with the family and that's about it.
        c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small? a family of 4, about average i guess.
        d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic? Well, they believe it should always be a man and a woman, but they wouldn't hate someone for being gay, etc.
        e) Is there anyone in your family, or among old friends, who is gay/bi/lesbian/trans? Yup. A few.
        f) If yes, have you ever felt threatened by their sexuality? When I was insecure about my own sexuality, I'd feel uncomfortable with the idea. I have no problem with it at all now.
        g) Have you ever questioned your own sexuality? From about the age of 13 until I just turned 16 I was in a questioning stage. Every now and then I'd come out to myself and best friend, but I was never quite sure of myself until just this past summer.

        3. Present Time

        a) Are there any homo/bi/transexuals in your life right now? More than ever.
        b) If yes, how do they relate to you? (Close friends, acquaintances, family, etc?) Some close friends at school are gay, one of my close cousins just came out to me as bi this summer, my best friend is bi-curious, one of my oldest friends is bisexual and his boyfriend, a newer friend, is gay.
        c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react? I'd accept them whole-heartedly, and if they were unsure or not ready to accept it when they told me, I'd help them get through it and try to help them figure it out. If they were all happy and bouncy about it like me when I finally came out for the real thing, I'd congradulate them and probably throw them a party, haha. It's a tough thing to do.
        d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling? They'd find it hard to accept. Honestly, I think if told my parents now they'd think I were just experimenting. I'd have to be in a secure, steady relationship for them to understand how real it is. As for my brother, well, he'd probably discourage it and tell me I'm just experimental, but eventually they would all come around.
        e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place? I suppose to some extent. There is always going to be someone who has a problem with it, and honestly, I don't think anything is wrong with that unless they're causing physical or emotional harm.

        4. Opinions/Deeper thinking

        a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is? I never really thought about it before, but I recently read something from another forum. Someone said it could have developed as a form of natural population control. As humans, it isn't really necessary, but homosexuality has been proven to be present in animals as well. If you think about it, if every single organism grew up to reproduce, we'd have too many organisms, even with the whole preditor/prey thing. Anyway. I believe homosexuality is a natural phenomenon and is caused as a foetus is developing in the mother's womb. and that in itself is a whole other topic, I hardly have time to start on that...
        b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else? I'm not sure what to believe for this myself; there re so many different debates about it. I guess my best guess is that it can be partly genetic, and partly disorder... and in some cases, as a child something could happen to make you more cautious around the opposit sex, say in a case of child molestation.
        c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples? I support gay marraige entirely. I feel everyone should have equal rights regardless of sexuality. If it's a religious issue, it's understandable; if your religion has issues with such marraige, don't go for it if you don't want to. But those like myself who don't identify with any particular religion, well I have no problem with it and I would love to be married one day. I think it should be made legal for those who wish to be married, that doesn't mean everyone has to. As for adoption, well, in the present time it would be very hard on a child to have two fathers or two mothers. Even now though, adoption is becoming more common. In a few decades it'll probably be as normal as divorce. When you think about it, divorce a few decades ago was practically unheard of, and looked down upon. Now, it's hard to find a family with both parents. Maybe soon it'll be more common to see same sex marraiges with families.
        d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?) Well, ignorance, for one thing. The majority of people just don't know much about it. Since they know so little about it, and since mankind has grown up around traditions of man and woman, they fear it and abolish it. It's different, it's non-traditional, it's against the way 'nature' intends. But if one thinks about it, if a man is born attracted to men, wouldn't that be a natural thing?
        e) Why did you choose take this survey? Because someone who had answered it suggested I take it as well. I created the survey, I knew my own answers already, but I thought it would be nice to share my own opinions on the subject.

              b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else?: Why does it have to be cured? I mean, if they use the bible as an excuse, God created men. They're saying god made mistakes by creating gay people.
              c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples? I'm fine with gay marriages but I'm not sure about adoption. I'd worry about the kid being bullied because he has two dads/mothers. Not saying that gay couples can't raise children though.
              d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?) Religion and culture.
              e) Why did you choose take this survey? Because I feel like I helped someone.

                  2. History

                  a) Did you grow up in a large city, small city, large town, small town, rural area, or other? (If other, please specify) Small city
                  b) Did you grow up with a religious family? No
                  c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small? Small (one sibling, both parents)
                  d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic? Tolerant
                  e) Is there anyone in your family, or among old friends, who is gay/bi/lesbian/trans? I think my grandpa might be and I'm sure some distant cousins
                  f) If yes, have you ever felt threatened by their sexuality? No
                  g) Have you ever questioned your own sexuality? Yes

                  3. Present Time

                  a) Are there any homo/bi/transexuals in your life right now? A friend of mine is transsexual, I believe. We never talked about it, though. I'm sure there are others, but none I know of.
                  b) If yes, how do they relate to you? (Close friends, acquaintances, family, etc?) Friend.
                  c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react? I don't know.
                  d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling? I think they'd try not to care.
                  e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place? Not particularly. My school makes a point to be open to these things, though.

                  4. Opinions/Deeper thinking

                  a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is? I can't say as I'm not a geneticist or doctor or anthropologist or whatever. As far as I'm aware, the current scientific consensus is that it's mostly genetic, so I've got to believe that.
                  b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else? As far as I'm aware, it's been shown that it can't be cured, and it's not a choice. I don't know how I'm supposed to figure something like this out on my own, though.
                  c) What is your opinion on gay marriage and/or adoption by gay couples? Neither are a problem for me, by any means. Also as far as I'm aware, it's been shown that gay couples aren't worse as parents.
                  d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?) Sure, all of those. I wouldn't doubt it has a deeper instinctual type thing too. I remember reading something about that a while back, but I don't remember specifics.
                  e) Why did you choose take this survey?
It was the cool thing to do.

                    b) Did you grow up with a religious family? Immediate family, no.
                    c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small? Small (4)
                    d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic? Tolerant
                    e) Is there anyone in your family, or among old friends, who is gay/bi/lesbian/trans? No

                    g) Have you ever questioned your own sexuality? I've thought about it, and determined that I am indeed straight.

                    3. Present Time

                    a) Are there any homo/bi/transexuals in your life right now? Yes, quite a few of my friends are homosexual or bisexual.
                    b) If yes, how do they relate to you? (Close friends, acquaintances, family, etc?) Close friends
                    c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react? I'd say it wouldn't change anything.
                    d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling? I don't think they'd have a negative reaction. Or care either way, really.
                    e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place? Yes, the majority of people at my school seem to hate homosexuals for whatever reason.

                    4. Opinions/Deeper thinking

                    a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is? No idea. Could be something random in the genetic makeup
                    b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else? I suppose it can be brainwashed out of someone, like any mental trait. Cured isn't the word I'd choose, though.
                    c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples? Fine by me.
                    d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?): Gay is different, and people can't explain it. The bible briefly mentions it, so of course that creates a lot of homophobia (even though the bible also says things about loving everyone no matter what. but, eh.)
                    e) Why did you choose take this survey? I dunno. Wanted to establish my opinion on the matter.

                      b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else? "Cured"? I wouldnt say it needs to be cured, but whether it CAN be "cured", I dont know.
                      c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples? Doesn't hurt anyone, and it's nobody else's business. No reason not to let them.
                      d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?) Religion, tradition, people don't like change, people are closed-minded.

C is for Charisma, it's why people think I'm great! I make my friends all laugh and smile and never want to hate!

                        a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is?
some people are just born with it, while some are based on their growing-up environment

it just happens. i had read articles on the internet regarding homosexual gorillas having sex with each other etc, so i wouldn't really say it's THAT unnatural for humans to become gay

                          d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?) i think homophobia is caused mostly by homosexuals need to seem different. if all homosexuals looked and acted like normal people, which i dont really understand in the first place... being gay isnt enough? you have to show it off to the world? you have to make everyone realize that you're different? well anyways, if gay people as a whole didnt try to seperate themselves from the rest of society so much, there would be a lot less phobia. maybe not more acceptance but a lot less phobia.
                          e) Why did you choose take this survey? represent represent

                            Sexuality Survey

This is a personal project of mine: to find out how tolerant the modern world is of sexuality. The following questions are not meant to put any individual 'on the spot', but merely to see how open-minded or how traditional you guys are. Answer only the questions you feel comfortable answering.

                            1. General
                            - What is...
                            a) Your first name: Nipunn
                            b) Your country and province/state (if applicable): Massachusetts
                            c) Your age: 16
                            d) Your gender: Male
                            e) Your sexuality: Straight
                            f) Your religion: Hinduism
                            g) Your ethnicity: Indian

                            2. History

                            a) Did you grow up in a large city, small city, large town, small town, rural area, or other? (If other, please specify)
I grew up in a small town suburb of Boston. I guess I was born in Dubai, UAE, but I moved over to the US when I was 2. I don't remember anything from before I moved here, so its safe to say I grew up here.
                            b) Did you grow up with a religious family?
                            Yes. Very Yes.
                            c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small?
Small. I'm an only child. It's just my parents and me.
                            d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic?
We don't really discuss it. My dad isn't very tolerant, but my mom is.
                            e) Is there anyone in your family, or among old friends, who is gay/bi/lesbian/trans?
                            Not that I know of
                            f) If yes, have you ever felt threatened by their sexuality?
                            Not Applicable but no
                            g) Have you ever questioned your own sexuality?
                            No

                            3. Present Time

                            a) Are there any homo/bi/transexuals in your life right now?
Yeah, I have a good friend who's gay.
                            b) If yes, how do they relate to you? (Close friends, acquaintances, family, etc?)
He's a good friend. We've been friends since 4th grade. He came out in 6th.
                            c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react?
I don't really rank my friends, so I don't have a 'best friend', but one of my good friends did come out as gay back in 6th grade. I thought it was weird for a while, but after like a week, I forgot and stopped caring. People started to wonder if I was gay, but I defended myself well and cleared up the confusion.
                            d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling?
They would be extremely confused. Probably go into denial.
                            e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place?
                            Not really

                            4. Opinions/Deeper thinking

                            a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is?
I would think it is mostly upbringing, more than some a gene.
                            b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else?
I think that homosexuality is more of a choice than a disease. Also, you can't cure someone if nothing is wrong. I don't think there would be a 'cure' for homosexuality because of how its a choice. If someone is gay, they would not want to be straight. No "cure" would change that.
                            c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples?
In terms of being a political association, gay marriage seems reasonable. As a union between a man and woman, marriage is a religious association meant to bring together two people to have babies (bluntly). As a political union, it entails nothing of the sort, so gay marriage is fine by that.
                            d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?)
People are scared of other people who are different. They fear homosexual acts because they seem so... appalling. If you think about it, even sexual acts would seem appalling if we didn't have sex drives.
                            e) Why did you choose take this survey?
better than doing my history project!

                              b) Did you grow up with a religious family? Not that religious. We went to church almost every sunday when I was a kid, but we don't anymore.
                              c) Is your home family (parents and siblings) a large family, or small? Small
                              d) Would you say your family is more tolerant of different sexual orientations, or more homophobic? More tolerant

                              c) Hypothetically, if your best friend came out to you as gay/bi/les/trans, how would you react? Congratulate them for having the courage to come out, but not much would change.
                              d) How do you think your family would react if they found out they had a gay child/sibling? Surprised, and probably wouldn't believe it.
                              e) Is homophobia present in your school and/or work place? Yes

                              4. Opinions/Deeper thinking

                              a) What would you say the cause of homosexuality is? From reading a lot of different perspectives, i lean more towards the side of it being a sort of genetic mutation.
                              b) Do you believe it is something that can be cured, like a disease; a disorder that can’t be cured, but can be slowed down; a genetic imbalance; a choice; or something else? I don't think it can be cured. I believe it's some kind of genetic imbalance.
                              c) What is your opinion on gay marraige and/or adoption by gay couples? I support it.
                              d) Why do you think there is so much homophobia in the world? (Religion, culture, tradition, health, etc?) I think that since it's becoming more widely tolerated and accepted, people are more eager and/or willing to come out. I actually strongly believe that there has always been homosexuality, but before now people were too afraid to come out because they were afraid of the consequences.
                              e) Why did you choose take this survey? I like taking surveys, and I like to express my opinions on these types of issues.
