What's the max Credits and does it unlock something when you have the max of 'em?

No. No it doesn't.
2^23 = 8388608
That is 23 bits, mind you. Since there are 8 bits in a byte and since you need a divisible-by-8 number of bits, make that 24 bits and divide by 8, you get 3 bytes.
Answer: 8,388,607 is storable in 3 bytes.
Looks like it's being stored as a signed value. Store it as an unsigned value and you could have 16,777,215
