The easiest good deed you will ever do.

Want the awesome feeling of doing something that could potentially benefit humanity without having to write a check, pick up trash, or run 5k?

Well, http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ can help you there.

Basically, it's a program that utilizes your computer's (idle) processing power to run calculations, simulations, analyze data, and other sciency-shit. Sort of like a voluntary bot-net. Except you're not DDOSing Sony you're curing malaria.

Literally doing nothing can save lives. It runs in the background using unused processing time. Of course, you can still go about your business while it's running, and if it's actually hurting whatever you're doing you can always temporarily pause it.

You can even create 'teams' which cooperatively work on projects, and there is ranking on various metrics of how teams are performing.

Maybe we can get an FFR team going...

Because there are no potential security issues at all handing over processing power to a third-party installed program :P

Edit: Nah most of these are totally legit, but still, yay paranoia.

It's ran by IBM, and uses SSL encryption on their network. I'm fairly sure you'd be safe, relatively speaking.

i like this idea, i did this with the PS3's version all the time, apart from the fact you could not do anything while it was active i used to put it on whenever i went out and went to bed. it is a good plan and i think i might have a look at it when i have more time to focus on its legitimacy.
