When going through the Amateur Scores thread, I noticed that people were posting some pretty good (not amateur) scores in there and realized the whole purpose of the thread was pretty much destroyed. That led me to thinking: how can we reach out to members of the community who don't know where to begin on the site?

While the automated message does show a welcome thread and shows people how to access their profiles/post in the welcome threads, it doesn't give an indication about how to use the message boards (nor link to any rules and whatnot), or how to fully access your profiles (or link to DotKritic's sticky). Part of me considered restructuring the private message to incorporate those things, but I also wondered if the community had any relevant additions to this private message.

Areas of the forum have guides on how to do certain things, like FFR R1 General Talk's MP guide, or the announcements that show guidelines for tournaments. However, nothing seems to delve into the absolute basics of things, like a guide for navigating around your profile (which to a new person, could potentially be intimidating), or how to do certain things on the game engine, or even where to go to access chats. Nothing seems to be all-inclusive.

Do other people think that the automated message could be expanded to link to newly created threads involving the basic usage of certain site elements? Is there something else that could be added that I'm missing at the current moment? I'd like to bounce ideas off of other people's heads.

EDIT: Oh, I also had an idea of adding something linking to the amateur scores thread, but I'd like to do something like that with the assurance of heavy moderation in that particular thread, since people feel the need to post really good scores that are suitable for the original FFR scores thread.

Refining that private message and providing links to certain stickies would be great. I actually plan on making a more detailed sticky for profiles soon too.

I definitely wouldn't mind moderating the Amateur Scores Thread so that there really are only amateur scores, but I'd want the majority of people to be absolutely sure on the requirements first. It didn't seem like the guidelines were fully determined without there being a lot of disagreement, which is why not much is done about the scores now.

This is something that Kayla brought up to me, and I didn't pay any attention to it at first, but she does bring up a good point.

The problem with determining full guidelines on the amateur scores thread is that lower level players will want to venture out into higher difficulty levels at some point. Capping the thread to a certain difficulty level stops newer players from showing their progress on harder songs, which could cause a downward gradient in activity after a certain point.

I was actually already working on an all-inclusive guide to profiles so that it would include some of the known information about banner/BG sizes, while incorporating details on how to use other things on your profile, like checking your levelranks, making a random thought, viewing your forum posts, etc. Maybe we can bounce ideas off of each other at some point.

        Re: [Suggestion] Community Outreaching

Yeah, the current rule of not allowing scores on songs above challenging in difficulty wasn't really thought out. We can get the discussion going again in that thread and hopefully have some appropriate guidelines determined soon.

As for the profile guide, I do have a lot of ideas but I haven't written anything out yet. It hasn't been the #1 priority on my to-do list, so you can go ahead and finish your guide and I can give you feedback at that point if you want.

Definitely like the idea of re-doing this, it only explains a little as is.

If I come up with any suggestions I'll post them for ya, perhaps you could post a rough draft of what you have every so often in the OP so we know what you have/haven't included already?

Absolutely. I've been working on it when I'm not playing my tournament songs or working on preview videos.

I'd like to get a rough draft of the entire profile guide up for everyone to see, just to make sure that it includes absolutely everything there is to know.

                Re: [Suggestion] Community Outreaching

I totally agree on that one. I remember quite well in fact the day I joined this site. I was confused as hell. I knew there were some stickies about stuff, but I never knew where to find them and always had to use the search bar in order to resist the urge of posting n00bish thread (which I eventually did after realizing that I was always stumbling on some outdated threads about files submissions on the site)

I don't really think I could be helpful on that one since I am not a sage or anything on here, but this idea definitely gets a +2 from MarioNintendo.

If ffr were an MMO, you'd automatically be grouped in rooms/areas with other people of your skill level.

                    Re: [Suggestion] Community Outreaching

I was thinking about running a low skilled (3s - 9s or something like that) tournament with high prize (dump in 250k creds to boot it up), to try and encourage more players to be active in the community.
The issue I see is, in order to join the tournament, you have to be visiting the community already. =S

And you will have to deal with the headache of deciding when someone is too good at FFR to take part, or they will simply AAA every round and win.

                          That's a pretty awesome idea.

I think it would be a good idea to put "how to fix lag"/"FFR Standalone" as one of the links. There are so many people I meet in FFR multiplayer that are new to the game and complain about lag. It's probably a big turn-off for a lot of people.

A lot of people didn't even realize it was on the front page when it was in the top 3 posts
