OK, I've finished reading the first book; Dead Until Dark (well, the French translation mind you...). It sucked really bad but hey, it's a story about vampires in modern times. It's not like I was expecting a lot. What shocked me though, was what I found written on the back.
Apparently this book has received the Anthony Mystery Book Award.

This is totally bat shit on a sandwich.
I swear the identity of the killer was chosen at random. It's like the author realized at the end that he had forgotten this whole murder thing going on and needed to finish it quickly. This isn't a mystery book at all.
