Should I remove my laptop battery if it's always plugged in?

If my laptop is always plugged into the wall charging due to the fact that I can't move it everywhere because I don't have wireless internet at school, should I just remove the battery so I don't waste any of it? I'm pretty sure my laptop will be plugged in ALL year 24/7; I don't bring it anywhere else.

So again, with this being the case, should I remove the battery and just leave it plugged in? Or can that potentially harm my laptop?

My laptop is brand new, so I'm trying to be cautious.

Leave the battery in, it will serve as a backup in case of power failure, so you won't lose your work. Most laptops have a chip built into the battery which stops it from charging once it's full. So you're not wasting the battery at all, just leave it in.

I am not 100% sure on this, but I have always thought that once the battery reaches 100% then the laptop just takes the battery out of the equation. Your laptop at that point is just running on the ac power anyway so it is basically the same thing as taking the battery out.

Edit: I guess I was wrong. It keeps slightly draining and recharging the battery. Well, maybe in the future they will find some way to implement my idea.

Every laptop I've ever plugged into the wall eventually became useless due to the battery dying out and losing its charge capacity. Removing the battery seems to be the way to go.

Pretty sure the battery losses a little bit of charge even when not plugged in. Probably a minuscule amount in comparison though. And I mean potential max charge, not current charge.

I never removed my laptop battery, now im rocking with 90% ish wear level so it doesn't last long at all if I ever move away from the mains.

                It does, for me.

If I leave my laptop plugged in all day to "charge", by the end of the day I'll have lost a little bit of charge from the battery. At most, I've lost 4% in a day (and that's when it's on).

I think you are thinking of current charge though. There is no way your laptop can measure the potential charge your of battery as far as I know. Say your battery can power your laptop for 3 hours from 100% when you bought it new. After a year it will only be able to power your laptop for 2.5 hours from 100% because it's max potential charge got worn down.

It can estimate max current charge. When your battery starts to suck, it'll sometimes say something like "Your battery can only hold 60% of its potential charge" or something to this extent. It'll still go up to 100% -- it'll just drop down to 0 much more quickly *as if* it had been capped at 60% under a full battery.

its pretty much how anything with a rechargeable battery works

I find it's best to remove the battery. If you're concerned about losing data, you can adjust your power options so that when you're away for more than 5 minutes, it will go into hibernate. Beware though, this is very hard drive intensive. (Can kill your hard drive sooner)

I use a battery backup system on my desktop because I work on important things all the time, and would hate for the power to go out and me lose that.

So that's my reason for telling you to keep the battery in and I'm sticking to it.

It is recommended that if you leave you're laptop plugged in all the time you remove the battery. I've noticed with my last laptop that the battery just sucks really bad now because I left it plugged in almost all the time and when I'd want to use it off the ac power it just dies in no time. So if you think you'll ever need that battery power at some time then yea def take it out.
