3rd Annual Desert Bus For Hope

LRR is back for the 3rd consecutive year for Desert Bus For Hope. All the money that is raised goes directly to Child's Play. Countdown to start of the game is just under 62 1/2 days (Around November 20th). Donating is where it begins. You can donate money and make them do silly crap. Here's one suggestion that happened last year.

2009 total donation - On Going

    2008 total donation - $70,423

    2007 total donation - $22,805

Desert Bus For Hope Main Page

    The Rules of Desert Bus
First off a run down of what exactly desert bus is. The following is information found on wikipedia.com

Desert Bus is the best known mini game in the package, and was a featured part of Electronic Gaming Monthly’s preview. The objective of the game is to drive a bus from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada in real time at a maximum speed of 45mph, a feat that would take the player 8 hours of continuous play to complete, as the game cannot be paused.

The bus contains no passengers, and there is no scenery or other cars on the road. The bus veers to the right slightly; as a result, it is impossible to tape down a button to go do something else and have the game end properly. If the bus veers off the road it will stall and be towed back to Tucson, also in real time. If the player makes it to Las Vegas, they will score exactly one point. The player then gets the option to make the return trip to Tucson—for another point (a decision they must make in a few seconds or the game ends). Players may continue to make trips and score points as long as their endurance holds out. Some players who have completed the trip have also noted that, although the scenery never changes, a bug splats on the windscreen over halfway through the first trip, and on the return trip the light does fade, with differences at dusk, and later a pitch black road where the player is guided only with headlights.
So now what you know what desert bus is and what it looks like, time to get down to the rules.

    1. There will be a total of 4 drivers. James Turner, Bill Watt, Morgan vanHumbeck and Jeremy Petter. Each driver will take 4 hour shifts.
    2. If we are stupid enough at any point to drive the bus off the road, the game will be reset and we will start over. It makes little sense to sit there and wait for a tow truck and then watch ourselves get towed all the way back to the start, and would artificially extend the length of the drive.
    3. Drivers are not allowed to leave their post at anytime. If it is an emergency and they need to leave one of the members of the pit crew will briefly take over

If this sounds pretty boring to you (the game that is) it’s because it is. And if you would like to see first hand what the game looks like here is a short video that is up on youtube right now.
    About Child's Play Charity:
Child’s Play was created in 2003 by web comic guru’s Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik of Penny Arcade. The following entry has been taken from the offcial Child’s Play charity site, www.childsplaycharity.org
“Since 2003, we’ve set up and organized Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 40 hospitals worldwide. In four short years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.
That was awesome. You guys have proven over and over again that you are an overwhelming force, and you really came through and made a real difference to the millions of kids that children’s hospitals care for each year. So we’re doing it again this year, only this time we’ve expanded Child’s Play to more hospitals around US and the globe so you can send toys to a hospital a little closer to home.
Child’s Play works the same as last year. With the help of hospital staff, we’ve set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, and movies. You can go to each hospital’s list and buy a toy, and that toy will be sent to the hospital. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape. Imagine being stuck alone in a hospital over the holidays, getting something from a fellow gamer would really raise their spirits. Some of the stuff the hospital will give away for kids to keep, while other gifts (like consoles) will be kept by the hospital for patients to use throughout the year.
We are arguably the largest community of gamers on the internet. The important word there being community. We are not a faceless corporation and you are not just a number tracked by a database and then relayed to hungry advertisers. You guys have proven yourselves to be a powerful force when stirred into action. Here is your opportunity to use that power to do some real good.”

62 days until this begins!!? Can't wait! It's already off to a great start by simulating how anticlimactic Desert Bus is with it's extremely long countdown!
