Re: So I have jury duty Friday morning
I actually had a great time at jury duty. First off, when I lived in PA... I was in college in NY, so I managed to get out of it the 2 times I was summoned. Now that I live in CA, I was summoned and went.
I went, it was fine... there was 150 or so people there, we all waited in a room. Around 10:30, they said that there was a case in jury selection that needed more jurors... the prosecution and defense had dismissed so many of the original pool, they needed more sent.
So, of course, my name was called. About 20-25 total. We go to the other court house, fill out some paperwork. Then are immediately dismissed for a 2 hours lunch. We get back around 1pm, and go into the courtroom and are told about the case...
2 girls are being tried for being escorts without permits. I didn't stay for the trial, but from what was being said/asked, these 2 girls (who were decent, but far from amazing) were advertising their escort services on craigslist... and an undercover officer decided to sting them. Then something happened, because the entire defense was based around whether police officers are most trustworthy or prone to lying.
Anyway, the voir dire continues til about 3pm, then the judge calls the day (court had been in session for a total less than 4 hours... 10-11:30, 1-3) and we have to report back the next day. We show up at 10 the next day, sit through more voir dire, and then I get dismissed and go back home. I thought about staying for the trial, because it obviously was interesting... but I decided I wasn't that bored.RIP -

Very interesting, Tass. I hope I'm one of those people whose name isn't called (if they do that where I'm going) and get to go home early.Comment

Re: So I have jury duty Friday morning
I thought you get paid a small amount like $50 a day. Isn't that one big reason why people hate jury duty?
Edit: Your job pays for the first 5 days, if you work full time, but anything after, you get paid $50 a day by the court.Last edited by Commandersa1; 07-10-2009, 02:44 AM.

I make $60/day just by working. Do they pay you by check or cash or what?Comment

Re: So I have jury duty Friday morning
Oh, wait. I was reading a random state's jury laws. I will look for a more general one.
Do you live in New York, Connecticut, or Massachusetts?Federal and most state laws require employers to give employees time-off to serve on a jury, and some state laws also require that employees be given time-off to serve as a witness. However, federal law and most state laws do not require employees to be paid for time spent away from work because of jury or witness obligations. Only a few states, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York, require compensation for a limited time for employees who serve on jury or witness duty. In addition, employers may not discipline employees who properly take time off for jury or witness duty and should assume that they may be on jury leave for an indefinite time.

From a random Texas county web site.Q. Must My Employer Pay Me While I am On Jury Duty?
A. Your employer is not required to pay you while on jury duty: however, employers are prohibited by law from firing an employee for serving as a juror.
So, at least you cannot get fired. :P
