    I got Reason

I've been using FL for over 2 years, and I wanted to try learning something new, so I got Reason 4 last night.

I'm not going to ask how to use it, since I can figure that out myself. I was just wondering if you guys could give me any advice that you wish you knew when you were starting out. Specifically if there are any stereotypical sounds or effects that most people with Reason use when they're starting out (think Sytrus presets for FL, I wish someone told me to stay away from those from the beginning).

I'm also wondering if there are any decent sites you Reason users find helpful for either resources or information. Obviously I can google them myself but a community that has experience on the topic is a bit more accessible.

    Thanks.

      A) I tried Reason a few years back, for much the same reason as yourself, just to try something new instead of FLS, played with it for a week, and have never touched it since.

which brings me to B) Why Reason, over, say, Ableton Live 8?

I got it because it was available and I know people who use it successfully, that's really all the reasoning I had behind it.

          Re: I got Reason

Well, I've tried Cubase, and find Ableton much better to suite my needs.

And who uses in-program synths anymore? Anybody that's anybody will use external VSTi's (For the most part)

If you're using a DAW for its' own proprietary VSTi's that come with it, then you need to step outside the box and check out, for i.e., some of what Native Instruments has to offer. And then pick a DAW that will suite your needs better instead of leaving behind something that you know like the back of your hand for something else simply because of availability, y'know?

I'm not saying, Don't use Reason, just wondering why you picked it to test out. Glad to see you're getting your feet wet with something else, you never know what you'll find that you'll enjoy better.

I went from FLS 4 back in the day to 5 then to Acid 6 now on Acid 7 and for the past few months have been learning Ableton 8 and am working on converting to that. All in between trying Reason, Cubase, Pro Tools, and others. It's definitely a good idea to play around.

I like using Reason as my re-wire sometimes, but not as a sequencer. Lemee know what you think about Reason though.

If that was directed at me, I don't use any in-house VSTi's for FL Studio.

He's referring to Reason. Reason only has proprietary instruments and plugins, it's completely incompatible when it comes to VST support.

                  A) It was actually directed towards KgZ.

and B) I second what iPatch said.

you... didnt know that reason cant use vst's???... I hope you downloaded reason rather than buy it.

Anyways, there really arent any "reason" noob sounds. Really, any preset can be custom tailored to your needs very easily. It takes a little while to figure out all the synths and effects, but you can get some really neat stuff out of it.

                      Re: I got Reason

If you're into making your own sounds from scratch to use in your music Reason is actually a pretty good choice. There's a pretty wide variety of various synth types and ways of programming them.

I also like the Reason interface having it be a mixing rack. Wiring up all the synths and stuff yourself is a really good way to make some pretty crazy things. Reason is a pretty versatile program. Even if you can't use VST's it has quite a few options to offer.

It surely isn't anything to use as your only music program choice, but when used correctly with other programs it really is awesome.

                        Naturally

I actually heard that it lacked direct VST support but I also assumed there was some way to get around that by now. I guess there isn't.

I've been messing around with Reason for a while now, I don't really know if I'm going to try to use it yet.
